HATE ETERNAL - Upon Desolate Sands review

HATE ETERNAL - Upon Desolate Sands

Season of Mist

Just for the record I am a fan of HATE ETERNAL. I also despise those who look down on their greatness because one man's vision was not part of the pathetic, yet profitable, trend. Guitarist/vocalist and producer extraordinaire Eric Rutan has carved his own niche in death metal's extreme yet technical side. What makes him better than others is that he keeps the rhythms meaty and the leads straight forward. Overindulgence was never part of his forte'.

So in my not so humble opinion I consider I, Monarch from 2005 as one of the greatest death metal albums of all time. It did what DEATH in their later years and MORBID ANGEL in their horrible years could not do. That being forge cruel and yet tech savvy death metal that was not overindulgent or commercially except-able.

From that point to today has been an acceptance as opposed to being floored. I thought 2005's Fury & Flames was a worthy one but since then every HATE ETERNAL release since then has been competent as well as having a new drummer. Upon Desolate Sands, their seventh full length, is slightly slower as opposed of past releases. There's touches of melody which you need to be quick to catch.

The album starts out fine with "The Violent Fury", a typical heavy bludgeoning opener. From then onward the remaining eight cuts act like a cadence to march along to. Once in a while some excitement will rear it's head but even after continuous playing it's tough to distinguish a good moment from a tedious one. Like I said it's decent only because I've been a fan for so long.
