FATHER BEFOULED - Holy Rotten Blood EP review
FATHER BEFOULED - Holy Rotten Blood EP
Dark Descent Records
Atlanta's FATHER BEFOULED (I thought they were from Chicago?) are one of those bands that came out during the time of the old school death metal revival in the late 2000s. I became a fan from the beginning. Early in their career they got tagged as INCANTATION worshipers. Ah yeah and is their a problem with that? It never bothered me in fact that's why I liked em. After a couple of years and releases they got on Relapse Records who put out their second full length, Morbid Destitution of Covenant, in 2010. I still believe that release to be one of the better albums by the new generation death metal acts.
But that label relationship didn't last long. I guess having INCANTATION as well as another band influenced by them was too much to handle. Since then FATHER BEFOULED has called Dark Descent Records home and done fairly well for themselves. So far they've put out on Dark Descent Records two full lengths, a compilation of old demos and rare stuff which I highly recommend. They also have at least one split release as well as this new EP.
Musically as far as the INCANTATION worship goes yeah it's there in part but FATHER BEFOULED have pushed further than being a clone. The six cuts on here are massive blasts of uncompromising death and doom. At times very punishing while at others it's a boot upon your neck and dragged through a jagged boneyard. After a little over a decade these guys have survived the revival hype. They sit upon a death metal throne built with their own muscle. Hell fuckin yeah this is great.
