ZMARLYM - Druga Fala

Before I get into the music there's something important to note. The cover art work on this release is amazing. To check out more from Maciej Kamuda Art go to the Facebook page or the Behance site. The links are posted below.

Now as for that here we have the debut full length by Poland's ZMARLYM. Musically this three piece act are black metal but their style falls into a category which for a few years now I've been calling modern black metal. As far as descriptive purposes go we're talking about a style of black metal that is heavy on atmospherics. Also the music covers a broad range of genre style as well as pushing boundaries without leaving the template. Add to that you cannot be a lazy listener because the music draws you in.

Some people might call it progressive or avant garde and I have nothing against those types of pigeon-holed descriptions but for me this album goes beyond that. These guys incorporate some prog, psych, electronica and hard fuckin rock into their blackened palette. There's spoken word parts, harsh vocals and background crowd screaming. The lyrics are sung in Polish making it more extreme sounding. The guitar work on here is mesmerizing. You can actually hear the bass. And of course the drumwork is more inline with a percussion specialist.

All in all Druga Fala, which translates into English as "Second Wave", is probably the most captivating black metal release I've heard this year. This band previously released an EP, Ziemie jałowe, last year. I've gotta check that one out now.
