VOID KING - The Hidden Hymnal: Chapter 2

When this release came in for review I recognized the band name. So I went back into the blog archives and yep I reviewed this band's debut full length back in 2017. In all honesty I gave it a 4 out of 5 rating back when I still did that stuff. But that was all about the quality of the music and not whether I liked it or not.
But in reality I didn't care for it since sound-wise it was like a mix of Alt-Metal meets NOLA Sludge Metal. Be that as it was then the new tag line on here is Stoner Doom Metal. OK but after one listen I can honestly tell ya that VOID KING sound like a band where they're actually from.
The music on this release is in part classic good Midwest American Doom Metal. I mean these guys are from fucking Indianapolis, Indiana. Can you say GATES OF SLUMBER or APOSTLE OF SOLITUTUDE? Now in no way are they clones. On this release you can hear plenty of Stoner Rock, Sludge Metal and epic fuckin American Doom.
I will say that Jason Kindred's vocals still rub me the wrong way. Look the guy is an amazing singer but I'm not into that bluesy Eddie Vedder style of singing. With that said the musicianship on this release is pretty cool. I love the drum work on here. It's just so precise and powerful. Also the bass playing is prominent throughout. And of course the guitar playing is rough, powerful and at psych times hypnotic.
This release is obviously the second part of the band's The Hidden Hymnal from 2023. Now I have to get that one because I've got the addiction. If you're into good US Doom then this latest one by VOID KING is something you should check out.
