OVERKILL - The Wings of War review

OVERKILL - The Wings of War

Nuclear Blast

Just to be honest, I look at OVERKILL the same way I looked at MOTORHEAD. Basically you've got a long standing band who carved out their own niche in music history early on and stuck with it. Now sure mid-way through their career OVERKILL did deviate slightly into groove / metalcore. But they came back to what made them great in the first place. Now they're glued to a formula which makes them happy. And even over all the years you the fan still get excited by a new release and sure they sound good. But in all honesty you still go back to their early releases because they're the best.

For me the last time I got excited about a new OVERKILL release was in 2010 with their Ironbound full length. Obviously the band really liked that release as well because they've put out three more that sound just like it and here's the fourth. Now don't get me wrong. I'm not being mean but just being obvious. The Wings of War is a good release because it reminds you of the past handful of releases. Blitz and company deliver with some solid chunky thrash with powerful and speedy cuts. They also balance those out with a few slower groove tunes.

Opener "Last Man Standing" is definitely going to be a crowd pleaser when played live. So is the follow-up "Believe In The Fight" which is a sing a long affair that breaks into a slam pit groove. Other fave cuts on here I liked is the home state hails of "Welcome to the Garden State" (by the way I am from Jersey), "Batshitcrazy" just because it's a great fuckin song title, plus "Where Few Dare to Walk" and "Out on the Road-Kill" because they're probably the most powerful songs on here.

So yeah The Wings of War is another great release by New Jersey's best metal band. But then of course it is because (WARNING BIAS OPINION AHEAD) OVERKILL is the Greatest Thrash band from the East Coast. They blew away their contemporaries from across the Hudson River back in the day. Presently OVERKILL are still, STILL putting out great fuckin thrash and those other guys are on That Metal Show or appearing in VH1 metal memories documentaries. I'll still take this over that other shit any day.

TANKOGRAD - Totalitarian review

TANKOGRAD - Totalitarian

Godz Ov War Productions

The genre tagline on this one was psychedelic doom. Well pass me the bong because I think I'm Ozzy. TANKOGRAD, which means “City of Tanks” in Russian, are a four piece doom act from Poland. Now the Polish metal scene is well known for contributing some great extreme metal music over the decades but as far as doom goes. Well it has never been one of it's biggest exports. The exception for that was DOPELORD who put out the fantastic Children Of The Haze full length a few years ago. By the way this act has a former DOPELAND member in it.

So after listening to this the band's debut full length I believe things are about to change. First off TANKOGRAD have what you would call a traditional doom sound with subtle touches of sludge and stoner rock. The riffs are thick and heavy in a monolithic way. The songs slowly trudge along with partial beats as well as some decent groove. They know their way with syrupy SABBATH-ian tempos. As far as their guitar soloing goes it's a mix of electric thrills to shoegaze riffing pedal worship effects. Time for the psych out to swallow your mind.

Aside from the music what stands out is the vocals. What is put forth here is a combination of clean somber singing on a few cuts. Other times it's a caustic choir like style from outside the musical realm. All of that in five cuts, the opener being the shortest, as well as a few folk vibes thrown in on the final track. I've gotta say "what is this that stands before me?" A sorrowful epic doom release which invokes jerky motions in public within a black and white photography image.

WARFIST - Grunberger review

WARFIST - Grunberger

Godz Ov War Productions

With a name like WARFIST it better be damm good. Actually this is not my first exposure to the band. I learned about this Polish blackened thrash duo a year ago while checking out their split with EXCIDIUM. Also WARFIST are not new. They've been pummeling their native land since 2004 and have a decent size discography to thumb through.

Now like I mentioned this is blackened thrash, a genre which I'm very critical of for good reasons. For the past 3 or 4 years there's been way too many bands mixing EXODUS meets MOTORHEAD riffs, add some harsh blackened vocals and getting the same guy to produce it. The end result is generic and boring. WARFIST doesn't do that which is why they're far better than the generic crap which passes for blackened thrash.

WARFIST have found a nice vein to mine and do it very well. They like VENOM and if that bothers you then maybe you need to be somewhere else. Also I don't know if they're aware of it but these guys do remind me of old late 80's hardcore with simple yet chunky riffs. Or you can call it speed metal, whatever it's just a cool vibe that reminds me of circle pit action from long ago. Along with all of that they do add some cool rock leads that slice in here and there. Real guy filthy style vocals and the solid drum work round everything out.

WARFIST are not trying to win you over with metal's technical proficiency as far as fast music goes. Instead, and here's why I really like it, these guys are producing raw fuckin in your face music that grabs hold of you and makes you do crazy things in public. I can imagine WARFIST playing a big venue and parts of the crowd are involved in a huge circle pit going insane. It's just fuckin exciting and gratifying to blast this one. Polish Power!

PIG'S BLOOD - A Flock Slaughtered review

PIG'S BLOOD - A Flock Slaughtered

Godz Ov War Productions

Here we have the sophomore full length by PIG'S BLOOD who hail from Milwaukee, Wisconsin a place where you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a metal fan. I reviewed their self titled debut full length back in 2017. After listening to this latest one I can say not much has changed overall. Well they're song titles are longer for example "Gates Ripped Open (Scum Choking Out the Meek)", "Violent Spirit of Decadence (Humiliating the False Triumphant)" and my favorite "Possessed by Nightfall (Violently Freeing Oneself from the Bonds of Life)".

For the record PIG'S BLOOD play a brutal brand of American death metal. The band is made up of veterans of their local scene who got together a few years ago to create something with an emphasize on the basics of the genre. On this new one they're still pushing the bludgeoning hatred to a level which should make any genre fan take notice. Musically it's a balance of mid-paced pounding plus some faster riff horrors. There's a duel vocal thing going on. One growled while the other is harsh screamed.

Once in a while there's a solo that lights up the chaos of dungeon torture. But in the end it's the whole package of pounding drums and diabolical guitar riffs which sends this into an unholy atmosphere. PIG'S BLOOD have definitely set fire to the revival section of USDM by bringing something which sounds fresh and yet contains more past gusto then the old school elite can muster these days.

HARMDAUD - Skarvor review

HARMDAUD - Skarvor

Art Gates Records

This is the second full length by HARMDAUD which is a one man black metal project out of Sweden. The one man is multi instrumentalist / vocalist Andreas Stenlund. Now when I was researching, reading the promo info and listening I saw that this guy is friends with Vintersorg aka: Andreas Hedlund. In fact Hedlund produced this album as well as the last one, Blinda dodens barn, from 2017.

Now with that said, yeah there are some parallels between this and Hedlund’s eponymous band. Fortunately it's the good stuff. First off there's plenty of thrashing folk metal melodies that jump out at you with ferocity. The lyrics are sung in Swedish which carries the ethnic feel. There's a splattering of effects, moderate keyboard use and an all around feeling of epicness in the song structures. Vocals bounce around from harsh screams, clean vocals, death metal baritones and even some spoken word parts.

Of course atmospheric black metal is the template as far as the basic sound goes with other elements be they thrash, folk and melodic death metal attached. If the desired effect was to transport the listener to another realm or time period then it works. Now as much as the music is sweeping and compelling it must be put forth that the artist is not a mere musician. I said this years ago and it bares repeating. The whole one man multi-instrumentalist black metal thing has gone two fold. Yes we still have the guy in a room with a laptop creating something. On the other hand we have full on composers like Andreas Stenlund who give us music that equals classical music of the past.

VALLE CRUCIS - Iron & Blood review

VALLE CRUCIS - Iron & Blood

Pagan Pride Records/Narcoleptica Productions

Despite having some truly stand out and aggressive leaning acts over the past few decades. The US black metal scene still gets knocked sometimes for relying too much on the scraps of their European BM neighbors. Far be it of me to trash my own nation's contributions to black metal. I do agree we have some copycats amongst the pioneers. I don't need to list the good ones since if you are a USBM fan then you should know our nation's great output of blackness. As far as the copycats, bandwagon jumpers and hipsters well fuck them.

With that said here we have VALLE CRUCIS a two piece blackened act from South Carolina. They started out just a few years ago but both members are veterans of their local music scene. This release here, Iron & Blood, is their full length debut. Prior to this they did put out a self titled EP in 2017. Unfortunately I never heard it. Be that as it may VALLE CRUCIS' brand of black metal is familiar to the point of which you could imagine the town of Bergan in Norway being the sister city of where these guys call home. I believe it's Laurens, South Carolina.

I say that because the opening cut, "March of the Night" has a riff package that Abbath could've put forth. But after that the band does introduce more of their extreme selves into their sound. Albeit there's still a lot of IMMORTAL or KAMPFAR cold, grim and frosty style riffs being produced which by the way are damm good. Trust me I'm not complaining especially on a cut like "Soul Fucker" which divides itself between a slow crawling atmosphere of hate and into an unforgiving riff salad of frostbite.

VALLE CRUCIS are a band that takes some past influences and reworks them into their own vision. Their songs on here have that melodic black metal touch from Scandinavia plus plenty of USBM aggression as well as malice. Gotta love the vocals which are of that graveyard mausoleum phantom style. So yeah this is a great USBM release. But I don't care for the cover artwork.

WOORMS - Slake review

WOORMS - Slake

Sludgelord Records

I've made my opinion plain in the past that as far as experimentation in extreme metal goes. If the goal is just to be different for the sake of difference then it's lost to me. The whole idea of experimentation is to create something unique, something better and maybe enjoyable. Of course sometimes the experiment doesn't succeed it's perceived goals. Which reminds me of an old joke. How do you say bullshit in French? Avant-Garde.

Case in point here we have the debut release by WOORMS, a three piece sludge band from the great state of Louisiana. I can understand that this band doesn't want to be just like their NOLA neighbors. I'll give em points for that. Don't let your environment define you. WOORMS does a great job at that part mixing up sludgey grooves, pushing out some OM vibes while also visiting the Desert Sessions sound from the late 1990s. I'll even say they toss in some early 90's era sounds of what modern day music historians like to call "post rock". We, who were around back then, just called it a punk fuckin rock influence.

Now with all of that said some of this is cool by my old school standards of enjoyment. But then WOORMS do go off the rails into territory that even the BUTTHOLE SURFERS in their heyday wouldn't touch. I'm talking grungy noise with spoken word sound bites. I'm talking whatafuck is up with the Gregorian chanted opener? Why are there so many samples? This ain't brutal death grind which kinda relies on all of that. In the end look it's their debut release and there is a cool band within all the outer wrapping.

VOUS AUTRES - Champ du sang review

VOUS AUTRES - Champ du sang

Sludgelord Records

A week ago my boss came up to me and asked if there was a full moon out because two people called out. I told him no because if there was I'd be outside running around naked being chased by professionals. Needless to say when I listened to this the first time it gave me that same sensation of ripping one's self away and running free. What this French two piece blackened sludge act does is not groundbreaking. But as with most Sludgelord Records releases it takes a Doom genre staple and gives it a refreshing take.

I really am in awe of this release whether it's the full on aggression or the tranquil tones this duo plays with as if they're gods of the darkness tinkering with our lives. I'd come home from work late at night, pop open a beer and listen to this release as if it was my sustenance. Frankly it's a more instrumental piece but when the seething harsh vocals do come forth they're like stab wounds. We're talking an hour's worth of torture as well as pleasure here and there. What with a huge sloth of melancholy pared with a dark labyrinth of sound, imagination and a comfort zone set on the prescience of evil.

This release falls into a category I like to call mood music. It's something you play just for yourself. Don't share it with others. Turn it on, most likely late at night, and just let the waves of sounds whether thunderous or atmospheric wash over you.

RAW DOG - The Schizophrenic Manchild Dove Headfirst into Oblivion review

RAW DOG - The Schizophrenic Manchild Dove Headfirst into Oblivion

Self Released

This is one of those "it's not metal but I like it" reviews. In this case it's punk rock. Now my reasons for not writing more about punk music is simple. It's not that extreme anymore. In fact moreover it's just political sloganeering by people too ignorant to understand the many facets of the issues. But once in a while something will come along that peeks my interest because it has that spirit and attitude of punk rock's past "no fuckin rules" style.

Which brings us to this latest, and from what I've been told, last release by RAW DOG. Basically RAW DOG is a one man act, Manning, who brings in various musicians / friends to help create his tongue in cheek offensiveness towards just about everyone. This is not my first encounter with RAW DOG. I reviewed one of their previous studio full lengths. I gave it a decent review and in turn they dedicated a song to me on their live album which was not very flattering but hey I wouldn't have it any other way.

Musically this falls in with the likes of BOOTLEG BILL, the SPO-ITS. JOE CHRIST and ZOOGZ RIFT. It's a package of equal opportunity offensiveness. Some touching examples of standout insanity come early with opener "The Sintroduction". The singer comes across as if reading his morbid manifesto while a bagpiper plays in the background. "Casio Madness" is just that. Imagine leaving the child's toy in an sanatorium. "No Wave Rider" is a decent anti-surf surf tune. "The Misery Club" is a change of pace with it's coffee house open mic vibe and guest female vocals.

Of course there's plenty of straight punk cuts like "Ode to Bill" with it's simple chorus of I Fuckin Hate You. The RAMONES themed "I Wanna Be Offended" is decent enough. Oh yeah this release is split into two parts. One part studio and the other live which has more of a punk snot vibe of pure hate. I mean with songs like "Fuck You Mother Nature" or "I Don't Wanna Play at Your Stupid Talent Show" how could you go wrong. Play this in front of people at your own risk.

OSSUARIUM - Living Tomb review

OSSUARIUM - Living Tomb

20 Buck Spin

Ten years ago I believed death metal as a genre had reached it's limitations. I came to that conclusion simply because you had a revival of the old ways by new bands who were sick of all the progressive watering down of the music. Here we are a decade later and it's still running the course which to me is a good thing. Now sure you're not going to find anything new, evolutionary or tragically hip. Thankfully that is. But you're gonna find bands into quality who will explore the various facets of death metal's deepest darkest corners.

This is what OSSUARIUM does on this their debut full length. The Portland, Oregon four piece act take full advantage of past influences in the realm of death / doom. Then they allow them to fester and rot until a point in time where the band uses up the remains to the desired effect in their creative sickness. Along the way the band also plays around with some blackened doom as a thickening agent that allows this beast to float around. The vocals are obviously cavernous, soloing mildly interesting but the best thing about Living Tomb is that the songs are just damm good.

Of course any prick could pick this one apart with name drops, nation drops and be full of themselves for it. To me that's pointless especially in 2019 when death metal fans want quality over quirkiness. Supposedly OSSUARIUM's demo, Calcified Trophies of Violence, from 2017 was so impressive it got em signed fairly quickly. Listening to this one sounds like a band that's been around for a while. Then again when you use good ingredients of course it's gonna be great. Nuff Said.

BERKOWITZ - World Gone To Shit review

BERKOWITZ - World Gone To Shit

Horror Pain Gore Death

Even over forty years later the name BERKOWITZ is hard to forget. California in 1969 had Manson and in the summer of 1976 to the summer of 77 New York City had David Berkowitz. A little personal history for ya. I was a kid living in New Jersey in the 70's. We lived right across the Hudson from Manhattan. I remember the whole story about Son of Sam. He ended up killing six people and claimed to be obeying the orders of a demon which possessed the neighbor's dog. Of course that story ended up to be bullshit. In the end he was just a nobody who wanted notoriety and got it.

So does any of that have to do with this band from Virginia Beach, Virginia? I haven't figured that out yet. BERKOWITZ are a three piece gore grind act that started out in 2017. As a three piece they're a guitarist who's also in a Virginia band called MURDER. Also there's a vocalist plus a drummer both from a now defunct Virginia band called THRONE OF BOTIS. That's right no bass player. As far as this sounds musically well they do follow a genre tradition.

BERKOWITZ are the epitome of old school gore grind. I'm talking about a short shock to your senses as well as your tolerance. This is pre-pig squealing vocal type of stuff with some actual cool riffs that remind ya of NAPALM DEATH in their early days. But of course they learned it all from REPULSION so there you go. A world gone to madness is more like it. Look you're a short drive away so please play Raleigh, NC. You'll piss off most people but I'll be the guy up front with the grey bear smiling.

OBLITERATION - Cenotaph Obscure review

OBLITERATION -  Cenotaph Obscure

Indie Recordings /  Dark Descent Records

OK so this came out late last year, in November, on Indie Recordings but Dark Descent Records is releasing it this year in the states. So argue amongst yourselves as to what year it came out. Normally I only give last year's releases a shot to write about in January and February so argue that one too why dontcha. Personally I really wanted to check out this latest full length by OBLITERATION. Ah but first some history for ya.

Let me take you back to the late 2000s during what I call the revival or new wave of old school death metal. Along with all the new bands from Sweden and the US rediscovering the late 1980s DM sound you had OBLITERATION who came from Norway. And as if on cue you had some in the metal media scratching their heads going "Death Metal from Norway? Well that's weird." Alright sure we all know that nation's history with death metal and how the musicians all turned to a blacker alternative. But ya think someone would have pulled out a BLOOD RED THRONE release or two? I mean they've been around for a while.

But anyways I picked up this band's second full length, Nekropsalms, in 2010 actually. And just for the record it is a damm good release as is their debut full length, Perpetual Decay, which came out in 2007 on Fenriz and Noctumo Culto's Tyrant Syndicate label. So fast forward to 2013 when this band released their third full length Black Death Horizon. Now you would figure by now a "new wave of" act would throw the yoke of being a copycat act and show more of themselves into their craft. Well OBLITERATION did that and this was one of my favorite death metal albums that year.

Which brings us, finally, to their latest release Cenotaph Obscure. Six years have past and after blasting this more than a few times I'm fuckin freaked out. While they still adhere to the old school sound they add so much more to make this original. Along with some pounding as well as galloping rhythms there's plenty of twists either doom related or just plain thrash blasts. Sound wise this is rough and has a sense of utter chaos but still has an ebb and flow which moves into passages of aggressive atmospheric takes. Vocals are more of an assault either being screamed, yelled or grunted.

OBLITERATION has created an album which showcases a band influenced by the past and yet has made it their own sound. It's a death metal album that will unsettle you from the norms without giving you a sour taste. It's like a crazed nightmare with an added panic attack. Then again it reminds me of work. Seriously I am like this at work. It's chaos within but somehow controlled and gets the job done.

ROTTING CHRIST - The Heretics review

ROTTING CHRIST - The Heretics

Season of Mist

I'm one of those hold outs waiting for ROTTING CHRIST to put out an actual black metal album, again. I know, fuck me running, right? Hey look I give em props as far as their history goes. Their first three albums from the 90's are essential black metal. They put Greece on the blackened map as far as the genre goes. But then their A Dead Poem full length came out in 1997 and they moved onto a more gothic, or if you will, a more epic metal sound as their career moved forward.

Now with that said I have a few of their epic era albums. They have some decent moments as far as that style of metal goes. So listening to this new one is not much of a shock. It's more of what we've all heard from this band over the past decade or longer. The Heretics is essentially a concept album with plenty of spoken word quotations from famous figures in history interspersed within the music. Once again the band's sound on here is epic and grandiose. It's an album which must be looked upon as a whole piece than a collection of songs.

Since this is their thirteenth full length and more than a few years in the making it seems fit that the band would go all out to make a profound statement. For those of you not up on your literary knowledge then this will be an education or an exercise in boredom. Frankly if you are into metal, in my not so humble opinion, you should be well versed into the historical subject matter of freedom to speak out and challenged those who wish to control your mind. That's the concept of Heritics in a nutshell put to some melodic industrial style trudging riffs, choir style vocals along with Sakis Tolis' caustic lead vocals.

The Heretics is another example of metal music being an element to educate. I'll give the band that gold star. On the other hand musically this is a boring effort overall. There are very few highlights to reference other than a clean guitar solo the sears on one track or the inclusion of folk elements and the cover artwork that looks like something GRAND BELIAL'S KEY should have used years ago. Like most of their releases which have come out over the past decade. I won't be returning to this.

GORGON - Elegy review

GORGON - Elegy

Dusktone

As I've mentioned before but bares repeating. I only write about music that I believe I'll like or looks to be interesting. This band and their second full length here falls into that latter part. GORGON is a symphonic death metal act from France who started out back in 2013. (Don't confuse them with the 1990's black metal act) Now the sub-genre has been around for a while. I've heard some bands of the past try to introduce orchestrations into their technical death metal framework before and it never worked for me. Most of the time it's just symphonic neo classical metal. Choose your theme to what makes them relevant as far as artistic.

But then here's GORGON who come across as a mix of BEHEMOTH and SEPTIC FLESH. There's a lot of intensity going on with their music. As much as they crush you with heavy handed guitar riffs, thunderous bass lines and the intensity of the drum blasts there's a huge precision paid to the orchestral melodies. Give some props to the production values put into this. Not even a simple repeated pluck of the piano key is overlooked. The vocals of course are your standard deep baritone death metal variety with a shriek or two once in a while. There's also some female operatic vocals sequenced in a few times as well. I'd also point out that there's some black metal peaking in.

Overall I believe Elegy is just an amazing piece of work. I kinda thought it was a concept album just the way the song structures weave along as if its an orchestral piece of music throughout it's forty three minutes run time. I spent days blasting this one and was totally transfixed upon the sound and fury which is invoked. This release will not change my mind on what I think of symphonic death meta.l But I know this is something I'll come back to playing for the rest of 2019 because in my not so humble opinion it is one of the most enjoyable releases you will hear this year.

MORILD - Sa kom morket review

MORILD - Sa kom morket

Indisciplinarian

This band hails from Denmark. My apologies to King Diamond but a few of your countrymen found some late 2000's post black metal CDs in a used bin and decided to copy em. There are three bad metal genres I never want to see revisited. They are nu-metal, death core and shoegaze black metal. That later one is what we have evidenced here.

Seriously years ago when a slew of acts started this experiment I gave it a fair shake. I enjoyed a few releases but they were the ones that were still within the blackened template. But then the bands washed the black metal away with swirling MY BLOODY VALENTINE and COCTEAU TWINS bullshit. It's no wonder that the non-metal hipster audiences swooned for it.

Which brings us here to the type of so-called atmospheric black metal only a hipster could love. I noticed in the promo they're not using the shoegaze genre tag anymore. Not surprisingly since it generates the same ill will that NSBM would. So the bottom line here is atmosphere, ambiance, guitar swells and tortured screams does not qualify this as black metal. More like Danish hippies trying to get their foot in the door of a party house that doesn't want them.

HECATE ENTHRONED - Embrace of the Godless Aeon review

HECATE ENTHRONED - Embrace of the Godless Aeon

M-Theory Audio

Alright so here we have the first HECATE ENTHRONED album in five years. In all honesty I never missed them in the first place. For me this band was a CRADLE OF FILTH clone from the start back in the late 90s. Albeit they were easier to listen to without any goth bile rising up from the back of your throat. I have one release by them that being their full length debut, The Slaughter of Innocence A Requiem for the Mighty, from 1997. I've always like that one. Now I'm not saying I haven't heard anything of their's since. Trust me I have and probably many of you as well. Thankfully I've recovered.

So there's a couple of interesting things going on with this latest one. First off there's a new vocalist, Joe Stamps, who switches off from high harsh hissing screams to gruff death metal growls fairly well. Then there's the addition of Sarah Jezebel Deva of CRADLE OF FILTH helping out on vocals a few times. Even though her haunting singing as well as operatic touches gives things a gothic touch it doesn't ruin a thing. Actually I kinda liked her contribution. Now are HECATE ENTHRONED going to take her out on tour?

Musically since this is symphonic black metal there's plenty of synths used as a backdrop to carry most of the songs along. Sometimes they play a polishing role. I've never been anti-synth use in black metal as long as it's used well in conjunction to the string and percussion instruments. That's a throwback in taste to the early days of this sub-genre. Seeing that HECATE ENTHRONED still has three original members left piloting this new one I'm not surprised at the direction this release takes.

The bottom line here is that Embrace of the Godless Aeon is a trip back to the band's past salad days of the late 90's. But I'll give em their due. It's more like a fresh coat of paint on a classic. I have no doubt early fans of theirs or DIMMU BORGIR holdouts will find this release enticing. Hell maybe even a few EMPEROR fans will check this one out as well. I said a few years ago that the days when symphonic black metal were a curse word to genre stalwarts needs to end. Mainly because I was hearing some decent stuff from the non-mainstream world of metal. This one is a winner but no more bandwagon genre fad jumping please.
