TANKOGRAD - Totalitarian review
TANKOGRAD - Totalitarian
Godz Ov War Productions
The genre tagline on this one was psychedelic doom. Well pass me the bong because I think I'm Ozzy. TANKOGRAD, which means “City of Tanks” in Russian, are a four piece doom act from Poland. Now the Polish metal scene is well known for contributing some great extreme metal music over the decades but as far as doom goes. Well it has never been one of it's biggest exports. The exception for that was DOPELORD who put out the fantastic Children Of The Haze full length a few years ago. By the way this act has a former DOPELAND member in it.
So after listening to this the band's debut full length I believe things are about to change. First off TANKOGRAD have what you would call a traditional doom sound with subtle touches of sludge and stoner rock. The riffs are thick and heavy in a monolithic way. The songs slowly trudge along with partial beats as well as some decent groove. They know their way with syrupy SABBATH-ian tempos. As far as their guitar soloing goes it's a mix of electric thrills to shoegaze riffing pedal worship effects. Time for the psych out to swallow your mind.
Aside from the music what stands out is the vocals. What is put forth here is a combination of clean somber singing on a few cuts. Other times it's a caustic choir like style from outside the musical realm. All of that in five cuts, the opener being the shortest, as well as a few folk vibes thrown in on the final track. I've gotta say "what is this that stands before me?" A sorrowful epic doom release which invokes jerky motions in public within a black and white photography image.
