OSSUARIUM - Living Tomb review
OSSUARIUM - Living Tomb
20 Buck Spin
Ten years ago I believed death metal as a genre had reached it's limitations. I came to that conclusion simply because you had a revival of the old ways by new bands who were sick of all the progressive watering down of the music. Here we are a decade later and it's still running the course which to me is a good thing. Now sure you're not going to find anything new, evolutionary or tragically hip. Thankfully that is. But you're gonna find bands into quality who will explore the various facets of death metal's deepest darkest corners.
This is what OSSUARIUM does on this their debut full length. The Portland, Oregon four piece act take full advantage of past influences in the realm of death / doom. Then they allow them to fester and rot until a point in time where the band uses up the remains to the desired effect in their creative sickness. Along the way the band also plays around with some blackened doom as a thickening agent that allows this beast to float around. The vocals are obviously cavernous, soloing mildly interesting but the best thing about Living Tomb is that the songs are just damm good.
Of course any prick could pick this one apart with name drops, nation drops and be full of themselves for it. To me that's pointless especially in 2019 when death metal fans want quality over quirkiness. Supposedly OSSUARIUM's demo, Calcified Trophies of Violence, from 2017 was so impressive it got em signed fairly quickly. Listening to this one sounds like a band that's been around for a while. Then again when you use good ingredients of course it's gonna be great. Nuff Said.
