VAVAKI - Kuolleen Maan Omaksi

VAVAKI - Kuolleen Maan Omaksi

Redefining Darkness Records

Over the past few years I've been seeing/hearing what I'd call a new guard of Finnish black metal acts who are beyond the pale of their predecessors. Now for starters I do love the Finnish BM scene's output from mid 90's to the late 2000's. And for years I've said other nations in Europe, mainly Scandinavian, brought about a certain style which was easily copied. But the Finns brought forth the necro and the brutality.

This debut full length by VAKI is not like what I previously mentioned at all as far as necro brutality goes. Instead we've got a new school intensity with heavy handed pummeling guitars and drum work via blast beat intensity. Once in a while you get some mediocre melody and atmosphere. But the bottom line here is crush, kill and harsh screamed epic black fuckin metal.

VISCERAL VIOLATION - Carnival Cannibal review

 VISCERAL VIOLATION - Carnival Cannibal

Horror Pain Gore Death Productions

So here we have some brutal death metal from Maryland. Yes I'll wait a minute so you can pick yourself up from the floor for laughing so hard. Honestly I was shocked, shocked I say, to know there's brutal death metal going on in Maryland. Especially something this fuckin brutal which actually sounds like it's from south of the border or even further.

Lets start with the cover artwork of this release. First off it reminds me of two horror/gore movies which came out in the past decade and still bother me today. I don't need to mention em but with the clown guy depicted and the abattoir  surroundings it should be a giveaway. Nothing against it, I just think it's a good representation to what you'll here inside Carnival Cannibal.

Musically this band reminds me of some Colombian death cult metal acts which I've had the pleasure in the past of writing about. Hell this band's singer/growler even wear's a kidnap hood. But with that in context what you've got here is some average sounding brutal DM with the vocals too high in the mix. In the end it's eight cuts all of which are slightly over two minutes a piece. But hey, they're from Maryland so shock value might be of interest.

ABIGAIL / VULCAN TYRANT split EP review

ABIGAIL / VULCAN TYRANT Split EP

Horror Pain Gore Death Productions

Alright so when a promo comes in with words like "Fuck Off And Die Posers!". I'm all for Search and Destroy. First off I know about the Japanese band ABIGAL. They're a three piece blackened thrash act who for a couple of decades now can't say no to doing a split EP with some other band or a live album for that matter. If you're into crazy fuckin Japanese extreme metal then you know who they are.

ABIGAL delivers two cuts here in an almost industrial pounded blackened thrash style. But you're always thrown a twist of some secure old style metal/hard rock lead work. On here its total 70's era blues rock via blackened athletics. My fave song of the two is "Rock n Roll Sluts Forever". Yeah I know it's Extreme Metal Maniac but I'm still Scumfuc Metal.

Next up on the flip is VULCAN TYRANT, a two piece act from Holland. Yep we're talking extreme Dutch blackened thrash here which is as primitive sounding as watching some freak gnaw on a bone for nourishment. But they're Dutch, I'm Dutch so damm. Why dontcha just put a line of cocaine in front of me and say "I dare ya".

VULCAN TYRANT is the band you want to hear more from but this is a collector release for ABIGAIL fans.

VARIOUS ARTISTS: Coronavirus / COVID-19 compilation review

VARIOUS ARTISTS: Coronavirus / COVID-19 compilation

Horror Pain Gore Death Productions

For a few years now I've been writing about some great releases put out by Horror Pain Gore Death Productions. That's an extreme music label outta Hostile City, USA aka: Philadelphia, PA. For those of you who were regular readers of SFM666 and now Extreme Metal Maniac, and frankly who isn't, you know I've always posted exciting as well as informative reviews of releases you the fan should pick up.

And now Horror Pain Gore Death Productions is giving something back to you fans. Yeah I know this sounds like a promo scoop but hey you readers know I like what I do and I ignore what I don't. Be that as it may what you have here is a damm good compilation regardless of the circumstances to which it's being put out for free.

As with most comps you've got stuff you're familiar with which is the frosting to entice you. For me that's bands like VIOGRESSION, FORMLESS MASTER and CARRION VAEL. After listening to this compilation I'm intrigued by new listens by the death doom sounds of SAVIORSKIN. Add to that the insane death grind of REDUNDANT PROTOPLASM or the punk/grind reminders of newcomers LOCUST REIGN.

The bottom line here people is extreme music which is what this site is all about and corrupting your mind in the process. This label have produced a damm good compilation for you to check out. Nuff Said.

UNBORN SUFFER - Commit(ment to) Suicide review

UNBORN SUFFER - Commit(ment to) Suicide

Selfmadegod Records

UNBORN SUFFER have been keeping Poland brutal for close to twenty years now. Well yeah they've had help from others. But seriously folks let me ask you a question. What European nation has the most extreme music producing scene? If you did not say Poland then you would be wrong. Think about it people, for decades now Poland has produced some great black metal, death metal, thrash and grindcore. Those are the four heavy genres as far as extreme metal goes.

As far as this latest one from UNBORN SUFFER, their sixth, goes well the first time I listened to it my mood was not into it. I got through half of it and was done. Although the second time around I kept thinking of having a hiptard loser tied to a chair with headphones on and having to listen to this album continuously. Yes I'm suggesting torture, get over it.

UNBORN SUFFER combine grindcore with brutal death metal aesthetics. Those latter points being total pig squeal vocals plus screams with a few heavy sided riffs and some surgically planted media soundbites. Their grindcore portion is on the tech side which is unbridled chaos. Then again if you go through all twenty-seven cuts, lasting thirty-five plus minutes, you might feel as if there's a concept album hiding within. Either way you're gonna end up with a sick sadistic smile on your face.

POEMA ARCANVS - Stardust Solitude review

POEMA ARCANVS - Stardust Solitude

Transcending Obscurity Records

Like I always say, doing a music blog does not make you an expert. Actually it makes you a fan because every day you learn something new and exciting. Case in point here we have a long time death doom four piece act from Santiago, Chile. POEMA ARCANVS have been around since the late 90's. To their record they've released five full lengths prior to this latest one. Their last release, Transient Chronicles, came out in 2012. So there's a lot of new ground to cover.

Like some other Chilean doom metal acts I've heard in the past, POEMA ARCANVS also take recognizable influences from classic established acts in the UK/European side of the genre. One listen to this and you'll think MY DYING BRIDE minus the violins. Vocalist, Claudio Carrasco, has a decent baritone death metal vocal. But it's his clean vocals, sing/speak style, which really reminds you of MDB's Aaron Stainthorpe.

Next up when we delve into the music portion, which is eight songs running close to an hour in time, we find the beauty of this band. The songs on here have a good touch of heavy riffs matched with equal amounts of melodic passages. To put it mildly, POEMA ARCANVS have created their gothic death doom masterpiece. Yet this album is not for the care free genre fans. I'm talking about connoisseurs of this genre who will listen to this weeks, months and years onward.

SILURE / FERETRO split cass. review

SILURE / FERETRO split cass.

Nihilistic Holocaust

It's true good things do come in small packages, in this case the split cassette format. According to the promo info both of these acts are death metal. Now for anyone into the genre then you know it doesn't mean shit these days because of so many bands expanding their sound or sticking to the old ways. After a few listens (actually the first listen won me over) I knew this hopefully would be on all other formats aka: vinyl and CD in the future.

First off you've got SILURE who are a new band from France. Their contribution here is three cuts, two originals and a cover song. Musically this band was a surprise as far as their sound goes. Imagine a more thrashy, chaotic version of HAIL OF BULLETS. The vocalist here sounds like a young Martin van Drunen. Their choice of a cover, which I knew without even reading the notes because of the bass intro, is "Milk" by SOD. SILURE are definitely interesting in a death grind sort of way.

Our next battle ready contender is FERETRO a band from Chile and have been around since 2005. They also have an extensive catalog of releases since forming albeit it's mostly demos. As far as their musically deadly contribution to this split goes it's four cuts. FERETRO are pure old school death thrash which is not a surprise considering the history of Chilean extreme metal. Bestial vocals combined with heavy handed riff action.

As always when it comes to split releases I look at em as a battle between the two acts. As far as this one goes SILURE are an exciting new contender. But FERETRO just fuckin rule this split. Extra special points for "Keep on Vomiting Pain" which combines some doom to their death thrash attack. If anything they need a full length.
