MASSEMORD - Ekstremist EP review

MASSEMORD - Ekstremist EP

This Winter Will Last Forever

OK so if you're a clandestine member of black metal's kvlt underground kult of fandom then MASSEMORD to you are old hat. Maybe you're now calling them sell outs since their releases are more accessible. That and the fact Chi-Com bat aids didn't take out half the world's population must really have bummed you out. Oh well look on the bright side, you still rule the forum.

But anyways I'm obviously not kvlt enough to have known about MASSEMORD back in the day. That being their days when it was still a solo project by Lord Hastur Warmachine. After a while the Lord took on some members from the band SATANIKA. Not much longer after that the Lord decided to leave but allowed the new guys to keep the name.

I learned about the band, originally from Bergen, Norway but now call Switzerland home, via the STAY FUCKING NECRO  full length from 2013. Little did I know it was actually a reissue of early MASSEMORD stuff. Yeah it was early lo-fi raw demo quality black metal. My second introduction came with the 12 Years of Mass Murders which actually quite better.

In January I had MASSEMORD's latest full length, Luciferi Imperium, in the emails and I blew it off by accident. Yeah I know it was a mistake because after checking it out I'm like holy shit it's true second wave black metal sounding material. But it's far better than the releases I'd heard before from this band. Plus they had a great album cover pictured below.

Which brings us to this EP, which I think is far more ferocious sounding than most of the previous LP's worth. Four studio cuts and two demos which are cuts from the previous album and really don't make a difference. The basic tracks here take the whole Norwegian black metal style to a degree of perfection. In that it's what you would expect from followers.

WITCHKISS - Transformation EP review

WITCHKISS - Transformation EP

Self Released

WITCHKISS are a three piece sludgey doom act from upstate New York. I know of this band from writing about their full length debut, The Austere Curtains of Our Eyes, which came out in 2018. That one was decent as far as having sonic control on the genre standards while adding atmospheric texture to some of their cuts.

Like I said it was decent but generally there are a ton of similar bands out there. Something like that gets lost in the pack, good or not. But on here the band seems to have made a slight adjustment. They still use duel vocals (male & female). They've mastered the haunting airy vibe and still inject in some heavy handed crush sounds with the big fuckin thud.

Personally this comes across like the contents of a YOB and WINDHAND sandwich. On that note I like it and you genre fans should as well. There are way too many clones of the name dropped acts I just mentioned out there. Being inbetween is a good touch.

Another thing I like about this WITCHKISS release is that it's short form. Here they lay down two great songs. And if you get it from their Bandcamp site you'll receive a bonus-track. But anyway my main complaint with their debut was it's length. This style is exciting in short bursts albeit eight to ten plus minute songs. In the end it's great stuff.

MACHINATIONS OF FATE - Self Titled review

MACHINATIONS OF FATE - Self Titled

Redefining Darkness Records

What we have here is something completely out of the box and exciting as fuck. MACHINATIONS OF FATE are a three piece act out of Kentucky, USA. Musically this is Euro style melodic death metal with so many twists it would make a Swede feel like he's been slapped twice in the face.

First off this is an Ash Thomas project, he's on drums and vocals. I've written about a number of bands he's been in like ESTUARY, SURGIKILL and CRUCIFIED MORTALS. The guitarist Brian Henn is one of those "formerly of " Ohio metal band types but works incredibly here. Finally there's bassist Jason Pate an Ohio metal scene alumni as well. Yeah Ohio is one of the most METAL of states in the union.

Musically the band's sound is similar to early HYPOCRISY with a good kick in the nuts. I'd also toss in the blackened grandiose of DISSECTION. Thankfully Peter Tagtgren didn't get his hands on the production or he would have fucked up the raw feeling this album has. Ash Thomas has for a few years now brought a new perspective to melodic death metal that defies the Swedish generic norm.

To me this is where metal becomes aggressive and beautiful. Break out the soft instro intros then follow it up with a violent death metal saga with great riffs, dynamic drumming and traditional scorched vocals. Add to that some sweet guitar soloing. That describes the whole album to a point. Plus I love how the album ends with a quiet instro piece.

Obviously I'm bias here because I have previous respect for the performers. But even with that said anyone into death metal with a melodic touch but with teeth and originality will or should gravitate towards this release.

GRIM FATE - Perished in Torment review

GRIM FATE - Perished in Torment

Xtreem Music

Once I saw in the promo that this band here was Dutch death metal, it was like hell fuckin yeah let's hear it. Something else which is cool and that's this band is fairly new. GRIM FATE are a three piece act who started out three years ago. To their credit they've come out with a handful of short form releases. Finally here we have their full length debut.

Now for someone like myself who for years has admitted to being a huge fan of Dutch death metal (it's a heritage thing). I found it very interesting that GRIM FATE, who are full on death doom, have a sound and style leaning towards similar US acts. I'm not going to name drop here. If you're a fan of the US version of the genre then throw any name up against the wall and it will stick.

Let me use a driving analogy for ya. You ever get behind some asshole who is slow as shit? You're following the slow bastard then suddenly they'll pick up the pace for a bit. But of course the next thing you know is the fuck head hits the breaks and goes right back to the slow crawl again. That's pretty much of what Perished in Torment sounds like. Minus me cursing, honking the horn and giving the other driver the finger.

Obviously I like this a lot. The band crushes with their doom passages but actually succeeds in adding what I think is melody with the riffs. Other times there will be a savage rush of riffage which hits you out of nowhere. The vocals are your basic cave dwelling beast variety. I noticed that two guys in this band are also in BURIAL REMAINS, who are damm good in their own right.

For the most part on here GRIM FATE cover the basics well which is what you want from a death doom release. Then they include some really cool nuances to their songs which no way in hell would you think boredom or generic. In fact I found it exciting. But then hey they're Dutch, so am I and you can go fuck yourself.

SMOKE MOUNTAIN - Queen of Sin review

SMOKE MOUNTAIN - Queen of Sin

Argonauta Records

Stick with what you do best and you'll eventually win. A few years back I got this Tallahassee, Florida three piece act's debut three song EP. From listening to it I knew this band was all into the whole stoner sludge doom style but were going to play it by their own rules. So with this full length they've fuckin did it.

SMOKE MOUNTAIN are Lee Pitt on Guitar, Brian Pitt on drums and Sarah Pitt on vocals. Don't ask me because I like the RAMONES so I don't ask those questions. Now the key is that there's no bass. No I'm not gonna ask that question.

And I don't need to ask questions about this full length debut. Last time around it was all about what could they be and on here they've done it. This album is more SABBATH-ian hard fuckin rock with obvious touches of WINDHAND and CASTLE. I said that before as well and it fits as far as the sound goes.

The riffs are amazing, can I stop there? Guess not OK so when this band rocks they're like the OBSESSED with female vocals. But the bad parts are when you figure in that the drumming in pushed back in the mix very horribly. Secondly the lack of real bass lines does lack in the songs. In the end it's OK, pardon the pun I didn't mean that.

HEINOUS / FLUIDS - Snuffed / Torture Euphoric Split EP review

HEINOUS / FLUIDS - Snuffed / Torture Euphoric Split EP

Horror Pain Gore Death

The HEINOUS side of this split release opens with a news report sound clip about a human chop shop selling everything from various major body parts to severed penis's. The song is titled "Severed" and it got me thinking. The Chinese government has been known to kill prisoners and then sell their body parts on the open market. I wonder if they'll try and do that with all the dead from their Wuhan bat aids epidemic?

But anyways I digress, so who's up for some disgusting goregrind? In these times of quarantine, nothing gets people to self distance from you faster then playing something like this. Both bands here are of the same filthy line. HEINOUS are a from Phoenix, Arizona and contribute (?) four cuts of vile bile. Sound-wise they're fast, crunchy with monstrous vocals.

On the flip you've got FLUIDS who also hail from Phoenix, Arizona. Hmmm, must be the food. But anyways they add two cuts which are slow, generally disgusting and creep out like shit from MORTICIAN's ass. Both of these bands must be fun to party with. So I'll buy the beer and you can bring over the Mexican snuff porn VHS tapes. Yeah the machine still works.

HAVOK - V review

HAVOK - V

Century Media Records

Some history to start you off with. HAVOK originally came out during the waning years of the Thrash Revival, circa 2009. They had good enough talent to get signed with Candlelight Records. By that point of the decade all the big labels now had a few new Thrash bands in their rosters to milk the trend. The Colorado act's debut full length Burn was a decent enough re-creation of the genre's past greats. I even got to see em once sometime after that.

But in all honesty the band suffered the same fate as most of the other Thrash Revival acts at that time. Having talent only goes so far especially when you're just repeating another era's sound. I couldn't knock em for producing something enjoyable in the short term. I still have their first two releases although I haven't listened to em until recently.

After putting three albums out on Candlelight, the last one Unnatural Selection coming out in 2013. The band went on hiatus for a few years until 2017 when they re-emerged on Century Media Records with Conformicide. Musically this was definitely a step up as far the band getting more technical and adding some groove elements.

The albums real claim to fame was in it's lyrical themes which to me came across on the Libertarian side of the political spectrum. Not that this was anything really new as far as the band's previous albums went. It was just that on Conformicide the lyrics conveyed messages which at the time really burned the faces of some knee-jerk libtards in the metal media. So called HAVOK a MEGADETH Jr. is not a slag at all.

With all of that said this new one caught me by surprise. Gone are most of the funky groove elements as well as the bassist, Nick Schendzielos, responsible for em on their last album. Their new one, Brandon Bruce, is a standout in his own right. How many other new era thrash acts have bass players standing out equally with the guitars? Yeah not many.

Musically the band has taken what they did best on their first two albums and matured the sound and execution. David Sanchez's vocals seem far more vicious now. Reece Scruggs's lead work tends to be about quality then quantity. Yeah there's a lot of homage to the past on V. But come on, like that's gonna happen these days. All in all I think this is HAVOK's best album of their career.

HENRY KANE - Age of the Idiot review

HENRY KANE - Age of the Idiot

Transcending Obscurity Records

Here we have the solo project of Sweden's Jonny Pettersson. He is the multi-instrumentalist who's responsible for this particular second full length release. Fuck me running but I am not familiar with the man's extensive previous work in a multitude of bands. But after reviewing this as well as his previous output I'm thinking he would like to be the next Rogga Johansson.

Well good luck with that goal but seeing that this album is a mixture of death metal, hardcore and grind I have to look at Rogga's DOWN AMONG THE DEAD MEN as a catalyst and this as the next progression. Now there's nothing wrong with that. Remember people I'm from the states (that's the USA) and I love how the Swedes took this mixed style and ripped it to shreds.

Age of the Idiot is a relentless 19 cut powerhouse. Even better is that it's not a generic follow the numbers childish affair. While there's plenty to slam your ass off to or raise your horned fist to in appreciation. There's some seeped in surprises of atmospheric death metal. Biggest surprise for me was their cover of "Psykopaten" by an old 80's Swedish act ASTA KASK. I've still got one of their releases via a tape trade from back in the day.

Now with everything I've said this release is cool as fuck. Age of the Idiot has that charged feel which brings back memories, actually personal memories, of huge beat-downs by bands which meant it to be memorable. Sorry Rogga but this is just too damm good.

NOCTU - Gelidae Mortis Imago review

NOCTU - Gelidae Mortis Imago

Transcending Obscurity Records

Considering the present state of current events worldwide this guy is definitely jumping for joy. NOCTU is an Italian one man funeral doom project by multi-instrumentalist Noctu. He's been involved with a few other acts but for the past five years he's devoted much to his eponymous named act. He's also from the Lombardy region of Italy. Now if you keep in mind that his region of Italy was severely hit by the Wuhan virus. Then you can understand why I think this release should be the soundtrack of what they went through.

Gelidae Mortis Imago is the second full length by NOCTU. I'm familiar with the debut, Illuminandi - Esoterica illuminazione ermetica, from 2017. But this one here is a piece of beauty and brilliance. Pardon my lack of name dropping classic composers of the morose variety. But I believe Noctu has not only channeled the macabre as well as grandiose style of a classic composition. From the extreme metal side of things as far as the genre goes this is one of the greatest works you'll ever hear.

Obviously Gelidae Mortis Imago will not be for everyone. It's over an hour's worth of music separated into six tracks. There are basically three main compositions with some filler cuts. It's on these main compositions where Noctu's use of the musical elements fall into a morbid effect. The keyboards are used as melancholy melodic foreground to some point. Other times it's a ghastly horrific atmosphere being laid out. Even greater is when an eerie piano pings it's way upon your psyche.

As far as the guitars go, at times they strain under the weight of intense agony. Haunting riffs perpetuate while the tremolo picked ones lay waste to torturous obsessions. The capstone comes with Noctu's apparition whispered vocals. A tortured spirit he is not. Think more like the warnings and threats of a demi-god before it's conquest.

This release is all about three basic elements which are ambient, haunting and foreboding. There's just this amazing quality and affirmation to blast it as loudly as possible. It's a 2020 version of "Bring Out Your Dead". It's a cinematic soundtrack to our modern day plague minus the cable news theatrics and politicizing. It's Bach in a disguise, check out it's composer below. This release is also the most memorable, and not in a great way, the soundtrack of our time. Nuff Said.

EREMIT - Desert of Ghouls EP review

EREMIT - Desert of Ghouls EP

Transcending Obscurity Records

There are times when I wish I were drunk then I'd get away with some of the things I say on my website. Unfortunately that is not one of those times when listening to this band's release. So who's up for some fuzzy riffs and pounding drums of sludgy German doom? OK if you're getting ready for a 2020 Wachen campout then feel excluded.

This is the second release by this German three piece act. Their debut was 2018's Carrier of Weight which back then I said was as good of a time you could have listening to sludgey doom which absorbs you. The band is more into taking you on an atmospheric trip then a groove laden ride or a beat down. We certainly have enough choices of the latter two to choose from.

Their latest is a two long song journey. The first cut "Beheading the Innumerous" is a nine minute beast which crawls along at a snail's pace. It's heavy on the fuzz and scorching on the vocals. To me I think it's a monster leftover from the full length.

Strangely enough it's their second cut "City of Rash-il-num" which I found far more interesting. For starters it surpasses the twelve minute mark. It starts out as an trance inducing atmospheric cut with beautiful ambiance. The guitars and drum work are completely simple yet they slowly build up. About halfway in the vocals and fuzz laden groove kicks into play. In the end both cuts are damm good.

CANDLEMASS - The Pendulum EP review

CANDLEMASS - The Pendulum EP

Napalm Records

I'm a CANDLEMASS fan and as far as this EP goes there's one good song and the other five cuts are crap. I used to think Relapse were good for draining a band's demo catalog dry in order to make a buck. I'm rethinking that assessment.

On here you've got the title track "The Pendulum" which is very good with a riff taken from SABBATH's "Symptom of the Universe". It supposedly was an extra cut from last year's incredible The Door To Doom recording sessions. The rest consists of two more tracks with vocals and three instrumentals.

If anything I'll say Johan Langquist's vocals are still amazing. I was blown away by what he did on The Door To Doom as a come back vocalist. We're the same age by the way so fuck you kids. Now be that as it may next year CANDLEMASS can release a new album and these cuts can be reworked and included on that one. Unless there's something we, the fans, don't know yet (?)

SOLIUM - Urwerk EP review

SOLIUM - Urwerk EP

Old Temple Records

SOLIUM is a blackened side project by THRONEUM's The Great Executor. I won't continue on with his real name. I will say his main band THRONEUM have been around for two decades and are very prolific as far as releases go. Oh yeah and they're kinda cool. Prior to this EP there was a full length, The Styx Is Witching Me, which came out it 2017. I never heard it so fuck me running.

As far as this solo project here goes at least I can say it does not completely remind me of THRONEUM. Honestly this sounds like a raw second wave BM demo. There's four cuts as well which is demo style. Basically it's something that could've appeared twenty-five years ago and the worshipers of the BM underground back then would yell "kvlt" and throw the horned fist in your face.

For starters the vocals are like rumblings from deep within a cave. I would say dungeon but caves have some echo quality. As far as the music it's pretty amazing with it's primarily slow rumbling quality. There's touches of tremolo picked speed here and there. The drum work has that ancient quality and hey there's some actual bass.

If The Great Executor's goal was to put out a black metal nostalgia release then he did it perfectly with these four cuts. It's infectious as fuck with a diabolical tone of atmosphere. Add to that a whole embodiment of evil. This is black metal perfection created by an expert of the genre.

NIGHTFEAR - Apocalypse review

NIGHTFEAR - Apocalypse

Fighter Records

Now if you asked me a decade ago about my opinion on power metal I would have given you a some what dirty look. Seriously years ago I was bored with the whole English or Northern Europe shebang. Then about five or so years ago you had countries on the Mediterranean who were reigniting the whole genre with bands pushing out the old ways with some originality . These were the acts I gave props to and for good reason.

NIGHTFEAR, who hail from Spain, are one of those cool style of power metal genre bands that make music which is not generic. Yes you'll get your share of galloping rhythms on this their third full length. There's timely fluidic soloing as well as melodic chimes and fiery blasts. The rhythm section is decent but kudos to the drummer. The vocals have a snarl character whether being sung solo or chorus.

Now with all of that said this band's song structures are amazing. The guitar work is cool as fuck. Once again this is an album that needs to be heard from front to back. I guess the term here is epic.

HYPERION - Into the Maelstrom review

HYPERION - Into the Maelstrom

Fighter Records

In Greek Mythology Hyperion was the Titan god of heavenly light. In Marvel Comics Hyperion was a character who was a bad guy and then a good guy. He was also a rip on Superman. Oh yeah and I just acknowledged I was once into comics. Now this version of HYPERION hails from Italy and takes their name from a series of science fiction novels by Dan Simmons titled the Hyperion Cantos.

I'm not familiar with that sci/fi series but then again I was always into the classics from the 50's and 60's. Be that as it may with lyrical themes and album concepts aside this their second full length is tagged as heavy metal. OK I'll go with that but for me this five piece act who started out in 2015 fits into the whole Euro power metal scene. Now that's not a knock on them.

In fact this is one of those albums which you must push play and listen all the way through to get the full enjoyment. To me that's the way it should be. No filler tracks, no hit songs, just a total play through which draws you into an amazing saga. So on HYPERION's Into the Maelstrom you get all of that. We're talking a diverse array of classic late 70's and early 80's metal styles all weaved together to make an old fuck like me smile.

First and foremost I gotta give credit to vocalist Michelangelo Carano. This man has an amazing range whether it's his usual clean vocals, the falsettos which rip or his basic harmonies. You follow that up with two guitarists, Davide Cotti and Luca Fortini plus the rhythm section of bassist Antonio Scalia and Marco Beghelli on drums. These guys are schooled in the classic metal style. Yet even though you might hear a cool influence here and there it's never a rip off.

Basically this is a top notch release which with multiple listens will make you a fan easily. Personally I love the fluid guitar leads as well as the vocal acrobatics. Ladies and gentlemen do you like heavy fuckin metal? Then here you go.

BLACK PESTILENCE - Hail the Flesh review

BLACK PESTILENCE - Hail the Flesh

Self Released

So in comes the, wait for it, sixth full length by this Canadian blackened something or other act. Trust me I'm not being a prick here. It's a self released CD but this should be a major release on a major label. Those of you who read this blog (and frankly who doesn't?) know I'm not one to push major versus minor label ideas. Be that as it may I will point out honest arguments.

The first honest point is that BLACK PESTILENCE are cool as fuck. Think of them of sounding like something in-between DESTROYER 666, GOATWHORE and MIDNIGHT. Follow that up with an accessible sound worthy of the general metal listening public. It's blackened thrash all the way and it's (wait for it) not generic sounding. Yeah I know, let me slit my fucking wrists.

BLACK PESTILENCE by the way are a three piece act. This full length of there's has nine cuts. Now along with the blackened thrash attack there's some punk fuckin rock n roll seeping in. Once again that's a good thing. You've got headbanging, slam pit starting rhythms, savage lead work, some actual bass riffs and foul blood spitting vocals.

As far as extreme metal goes Hail the Flesh is an all out classic. Which is why I'm kinda pissed that it's a self released album. It shouldn't be! Even the indie labels should take notice of this band.  BLACK PESTILENCE has paid more dues than many a newbie blackened thrash act who uses the same producer as everyone else seems to use. I will scream this band praises for the rest of 2020.

HELLHOOKAH - The Curse review

HELLHOOKAH - The Curse

NoSlip Records

I should change the intro of my blog to "Give me something interesting or unique and I'll write about it." Seriously when I see a band's name is HELLHOOKAH you're damm right I wanna check em out. Obviously I'm glad I did but when I first gave this their second full length a blast. I was like OK it's cool but I put it on the back burner for a week or two.

So now after two more listens I have a newfound appreciation for this release. First off HELLHOOKAH are a two piece doom act from Lithuanian. Trust me when I say that their nation has not provided me with many acts to write about. So there's why I find this one unique in that respect. The players here are Arnas on vocals, guitar and bass accompanied by Gintare on drums.

Now the one thing that stands out here is Arnas' vocal style which is close to Messiah Marcolin's (formerly of CANDLEMASS for those of you who forgot). Uncanny as it may be he looks like a young version of the Mad Monk. Below is a band photo, he's the tall guy.

So it's with that in mind as well as the style of doom being put forth on this release that I can't help but think of this band as Messiah's children. Yes musically this sounds like a fuckin raw demo version of old CANDLEMASS. Or if you think about it, a Messiah solo album. I mean it has the killer riffs, the dynamic accompany style drum work and the power of explosive structured songs.

Yeah this is epic old school doom that's infectious as hell. If there was one thing I'd subtract points to it would be that Arnas does not has the vocal range of Messiah. That's evident early on with the first two cuts of this seven song release. Otherwise The Curse is pretty damm good.

In an era where doom acts are pushing for a more plus more colossal sound. It's kinda cool to hear an act cut a damm good doom release based on the raw basics and good song writing. Plus it helps that the songs create a want to raise fists and bang yer head. This little o'l band from Lithuanian is the biggest surprise you'll get in 2020.

MARROWFIELDS - Metamorphoses review

MARROWFIELDS - Metamorphoses

Black Lion Records

Some styles of music I like to deem "nighttime sounds". I wouldn't classify it as easy listening at all. Basically it's music that has a somber tone but still vicious enough enjoyment for the twisted mind. Before the present day circumstances I'd get home from work late at night. So I'd want my extreme musical preferences based of getting off of work in the AM hours. I wanted an atmospheric feeling of re-laxness.

So if it was 3 AM in the morning I'd gladly play this full length debut by MARROWFIELDS. They're a five piece doom act hailing from Fall River, Massachusetts. Now what their sound consists of does have a born on date. In other words it's nothing new to fans of atmospheric doom bands past and present. That's not a slag against em and there's no need to name drop. I just think it's cool that they've placed their own stamp on this style of doom.

Metamorphoses is in a word, majestic. Musically you've got a release where these five musicians perform like a symphony. This five cut, over fifty minute long release, comes across like one long piece versus an album of individual cuts with varied connections. The vocals are sung clean and with deep conviction. The rhythms are soft like velvet but wrapped around a ticking bomb of explosiveness. In the end this release is an epic listening experience

TAAKE / WHOREDOM RIFE - Pakt split review

TAAKE / WHOREDOM RIFE - Pakt split

Terratur Possessions

Well wake me the fuck up for some good Norwegian black metal. Seriously 2020 has sucked for great BM and we're in a pandemic with sickness and death. So here's two bands of which one I'm a fan of and the second is new to me.

Let's start with the latter, WHOREDOM RIFE, who've been around for a few years now. Musically their two cuts on here are completely different. "From Nameless Pagan Graves" is total second wave BM sounding. I thought it was a cover. Now their second cut, "En Lenke Smidd i Blod" is a beautiful atmospheric BM piece. I like their second cut enough that I'm going to check out all their past stuff.

Next up it's TAAKE with one original, "Ubeseiret" and a cover of a SISTERS OF MERCY song "Heartland". As far as the latter cut goes I was never a fan of most post punk so the cut comes over as Hoest doing goth. Despite what some in the metal media say, in order to be hip, post punk and black metal do not go together. It's either one or the other and not combined.

As far as the original cut "Ubeseiret" goes it's typical TAAKE style. Normally whenever I review splits it's about a brawl between the two acts. As far as this split goes I wanna say it's a tie but I wanna check out WHOREDOM RIFE's past catalog because of one of their cuts. And that's the whole idea of putting out split releases in the first place.
