JENNER - To Live is to Suffer Reissue review

JENNER - To Live is to Suffer Reissue

Fighter Records

So I was watching this band's video for their song "Factory of Death" and thought hey I've seen this before. Yeah I watched this video a few years ago. So sadly on my part I never bothered to check this band out originally. But hey that's what reissues are for right?

So here is the debut album by this Serbian all female thrash band. It was originally released in 2017 on Inferno Records. The band was a four piece act at that time. More on that one later. But musically this is a really killer sounding album. If I had heard this in 2017 then it would've been in my top albums of the year listings.

So why is this album so amazing? Well it has every element that you want in a thrash album. First off guitarist Aleksandra Stamenkovic is a riff maniac as well as a damm good soloist to boot. Andelina Mitic is a great vocalist with a decent rage. She howls, screams and sings like a major player. The drum work on here is solid. But hey you can actually hear the bass lines from Mina Petrovic.

In the end, hell yeah this is a great reissue. At present JENNER is still around albeit with Aleksandra Stamenkovic on guitar and vocals with a new bassist and drummer.

JUDGEMENT - Self Titled EP review

JUDGEMENT - Self Titled EP

Metal Scrap Records

METALLICA is coming to town later this summer. I'm not going but if I was and had a chance to ask James Hetfield a question it would be like this. "James, you use to play thrash a long time ago, so what do you think about bands from all over the world playing thrash as if it was still 1984?" Chances are he'd call security to haul my belligerent ass away.

Now with that said it's a fact that in other parts of the world thrash is still a vibrant force. Case in point here we have the debut release by Serbia's JUDGEMENT. Even though it's just a five song release it packs a lot of punch and contains more excitement then some full lengths I've heard this year. They're not a traditional thrash act. In fact they mix in plenty of classic true metal overtones which I love. Their song "Metal Warriors" sounds like it should've came out in 1982 instead of 2018.

JUDGEMENT are a five piece act, (two guitarists, bass player, drummer and a singer who can wail as well as push real guy vocals.) Their songs are up with the times, for example "Slaves of Technology". The band also delves into more philosophical lyrical territory. Add to that they also know how to layer in some modern progressive elements, fine melodic soloing along with galloping riffs. I believe they like IRON MAIDEN as well as some Euro power metal acts. A very good start.

TERRORHAMMER – In the Name of Hell review

TERRORHAMMER – In the Name of Hell

Dying Victims Productions

Personal preferences, these days I'd rather hear blackened thrash in small formats like this one here which is a CDEP. I know years ago there were some great full lengths by SODOM, DESTRUCTION and AURA NOIR to name a few. But to be fair they each had two good ones and the rest could be cherry picked for cuts worthy. Fast forward to now and I'll tell ya at times I think three quarters to half of what I hear from a blackened thrash act is fine but the bands are adding filler. Just for the record TERRORHAMMER's previous release was a full length.

OK so as far as this release goes there's no filler here from TERRORHAMMER, a two piece act hailing from Serbia. In fact there are five cuts on it and even the short opener is pretty cool. Then there's the cover of the KORROZIA METALLA (a long time running Russian thrash act) song "Black Terror". Hey that's a shocker and shows that this band knows good stuff from their area of the world as opposed from pointing westward.

TERRORHAMMER are not trying to re-invent the blackened thrash genre, thankfully. No what they produce on here is on point and yeah it's perfect. It's a straight up VENOM meets MOTORHEAD take with headbanging riffs, sick vocals and pure rhythm to carry you through till the solos slice. It's a classic sound one that MIDNIGHT rules at.
