STILLBORN - Mirrormaze & Die In Torment 666 reissue

Years ago I was getting stuff to review sent to the blog from a promo guy in Poland. Along with that he'd also send me other releases to check out personally. That's how I learned about STILLBORN. The release in question was Manifiesto de blasfemia which came out in 2007. I didn't get it until 2010 but hey late is better than never at all right. The bottom line is that I became a fan enough that I have two more of their releases which came out after it.
Norway is good at black metal, Sweden is good at death metal but Poland is good at both. I'm gonna let that statement hang there as you count to ten then admit that's right. STILLBORN are one of those great bands, who started out in the late nineties, that have carried their nation's extreme metal flag for many years. Unfortunately you won't find a lot of info on em from the mainstream metal media. Be that as it may you do need to learn about em and here's a great way to get started.
Mirrormaze & Die In Torment 666 is a repackaging of the band's first two demos (plus a few extras). Mirrormaze came out in 1999 and Die In Torment 666 came out in 2001. First off when you listen to these cuts ya think how amazing the music stands the test of time as well as to bands of today. I mean seriously I listen to plenty of new blackened death acts and their stuff doesn't sound further from what STILLBORN was doing when these new kids were still in diapers.
Of course the band has changed somewhat over the years with guitarist/vocalist Tomasz "Killer" Zięba being the only original member. Still for those of you out there looking to the past for greatness because the modern world sucks then look no further. But be forewarned, STILLBORN's early material shows a band who knew how to envelope the listener in a devilish riff salad. You cannot mistake the influence of MORBID ANGEL and filth-ing it up a bit.
All in all it's a great reissue. Both demos are intense but I think the material from Die In Torment 666 is in the most way the road to brutalsville.
