If your feel for brutal / technical Eastern European Death Metal has subsided over the past few years because your old time favorites haven't put out some stuff then here ya go. ANGERSEED is here to fill your need. They are a four piece act out of Hungary who have been around since 2008. 

Yeah I know it's another cool band from the past who's around today to kick some fucking ass. As far as history goes ANGERSEED put out a demo in 2009. Afterwards they've released a few EPs and a full length, The Proclamation, back in 2016. Their only original member is vocalist Peter D. Maniak who is keeping this band and it's style alive. Hails to this guy! The guy has some great deep mean vocals.

Add to that I give props to drummer Jozsef Gava. I mean this guy is the best Metal drummer in Hungary. His performance on here is fuckin fantastic. This guy's drumwork on this release is a dynamic observation on whether a release is great or average. Jozsef Gava makes it great. Plus you've got guitarist Viktor Nagy who's riffs interplay with the the brutal drumming. Add to that his psychotic solos. 

Yeah ANGERSEED' Rapture Is Mine… Glory Is Ours is an amazing release. This is what I wanna hear as far as Eastern European Death Metal goes. Yes totally brutal with a slight Tech Death sound and drum work which is diabolical. Hell Fuckin Yeah!

Well some full disclosure here, this my first time checking out VRAG. Then again not a lot of newer Hungarian Black Metal comes my way and Filosofem Records is a label out of Hungary. Hopefully I'll rectify that in the future. But anyways VRAG is a one man Black Metal act. The one man is Vrag (aka: Roland Neubauer) who sings and performs all instruments. Here's a photo of the guy. Imagine hiking through the woods and you meet up with him? Hell you would rather bump into Bigfoot or a Dogman. 

Be that as it may VRAG has been around since 2010. In that time there's been some demos released, compilations and some split releases. It wasn't until 2014 when Vrag got his game on to release a full length which was Mourningwood which came out on Dark East Productions. Renduletlenul is now the fourth full length by VRAG and the second one on this label.

Musically I have to be honest when I was listening to the opening title cut I'm thinking OK this is straight up early 90's BM in sound. It's like that generic take on early 90's Norwegian BM as opposed to the stuff from Eastern Europe at the same time. But hey I like it because it fits the bill as far me being a BM fan. Look when it comes to Black Metal, 99.9% of the time I wanna hear something cold, cruel and hateful. 

This six song release by VRAG fits the bill with classic icy tremolo picked riffs. The drumming is super exciting. And the vocals are a like a raspy reptilian quality. The song structures move from harsh reality to melodic atmospheric touches. VRAG navigates the harsh and beauty perfectly. There's some ambient touches which are not boring time consuming stretches. 

In the end I really like this album a lot. I mean sound-wise it can sit next to any of the older stuff and feel comfortable being there. The production is great as in not mainstream commercial or wannabe kvlt low fi crap. It's just a great record which means I've gotta go buy this band's back catalog. Nuff Said!

Ya know I don't care how old I get, I'm 60 now by the way. But I'll always love old school death metal whether it's the original masters or some new school talent. It's just the fuckin killer sound which makes me go nuts and I crank the volume up. I'm sure these Hungarians feel the same way. This is their debut album and from what I've read about em they've got extreme metal history.

Originally COFFINBORN started out in 2013. A year later they released their debut EP Beneath the Cemetery which came out on this label. And then they disappeared into a flux of other bands. MORBID CARNAGE is one of note. But finally these guys regrouped to put this album together. 

Musically this is like GRAVE meets MORTICIAN and INCANTATION in a back alley in Budapest for a rumble. Yeah this is pure death metal performed in the old ways. I mean we're talking about thick, heavy handed riffs that shake your foundation. Add to that fuckin dive bombing solos, cavernous vocals, amazing drum work, etc. 

COFFINBORN pretty much take what was great decades ago and make it all sound fresh today. Old School Death Metal will never fall out of fan appreciation when you have musicians like this keeping it alive. Cadaveric Retribution is obviously one of my favorite releases for 2023. I got stuck listening to it for a few weeks now.

Oh to be in Transylvania in the Fall, yeah that would be cool. Of course I'm reminiscing about what I watched in old 60's Hammer Horror flicks. But actually I did review a death metal band from Transylvania years ago. They were cool, loved my review of their EP and probably turned out to be the biggest thing in Transylvania. NEMERE are a Hungarian black metal act who are not from Transylvania but their name comes from a mountain range in (what for it) Transylvania. Otherwise that's all there is to say anymore about (one more time) Transylvania.


This the debut release from NEMERE who have actually been around since 2007. Prior to this the band released a few demos. Now as far this release goes I would not pigeon-hole this four piece into the genre of black metal. On the contrary they have so much going on here that makes them pretty fuckin cool. Many of their songs are themed in war, battle and loss. A lot of the song structures are blackened death but the band kicks in some thrash, a bit of traditional folk and once in a while there's some straight up old school metal riffs.


The tops of course are the vocals. First off they're sung in a harsh tone of Hungarian. But NEMERE hail from Sátoraljaújhely, a northern town in their great nation. So in their native tongue/accent the vocals are truly filthy sounding with visions of spit, blood and bile emitting with each chorus. The offensiveness of that just makes me smile even more. All of that put together makes this a tremendous release that has a unique quality as well as being extreme and of course founded in old school tradition. Wanna know why I do this blog? It's because of cool bands like NEMERE.
