Back in 2008 a good friend of mine turned me onto this Canadian act with their first full length, Rock ‘n’ Roll Babylon, which came out in 2003. To me this is one of the best match ups of DISCHARGE and GBH meets MOTORHEAD and TANK. The band's second album, City Weapons, which came out in 2005 was decent. 

But this album, which originally came out in 2007, is when the band dropped the Hardcore influences and went straight up Hard Fuckin Rock n Roll. I mean the opening track is "Rock 'n' Roll Is the Only Way". And if that wasn't an obvious introduction to where this band was headed then you were an idiot. This was basically MOTORHEAD lite which at the time the band said was a change to a more Rock n Roll style. 

Now I'm not going to get into what people years ago said about this album whether good or bad. To me it just doesn't fuckin matter. If this was the first album by this band I heard I'd be like hell yeah. I mean ya got the gruff real guy vocals sorta Lemmy like. Of course there's plenty of other singers which come to mind. Be that as it may the songs just rock the fuck out. 

Just blast this album and tell me your head doesn't bang a bit. Do you find yourself tapping your hand on your knee? And what about some air guitar moments, do you kick into that as well? Well I do and that's why No Speed Limit for Destruction is a must have release. If you don't own it already then here ya go.

NECROT are (in my not so humble opinion) one of the better (if not the best) new school US death metal bands today. The reason is simple and it's not hype. Since their debut Blood Offerings which came out in 2017 they've broken out and created damm good death metal which hearkens to the past but doesn't dwell there as if they're copycats. Their second album, Mortal from 2020, was just fuckin amazing. I mean that was my favorite album of that year. So does this Oakland, California keep it going on their third try? Ah well hell yeah.

 

Lifeless Birth is a notch up (or below if you prefer) in the diabolical sound of this band's progression from starting out with hardcore influences (listen to their demos) to pure old school death metal with cool soloing by Sonny Reinhardt that's more rhythm at times but does attack from above slices. Luca Indrio's bass playing is solid and his vocals are a standout as far as being deep sounding and hateful. Add in Chad Gailey as an damm good drummer with his work on here, to much triggers aside. 

On Lifeless Birth the band shows some obvious progression without losing what was great about in the past. The song structures on here display a varied guitar riff pattern with bass line accompaniment that deviates from standard groove. It's like the early days of tech death minus the insanity. I mean sure you can bang your head and start a slam pit to the sounds of this one. But for me this is an intense sounding piece of work that grabs for solid attention.

I've listened to Lifeless Birth around a dozen times in the past couple of weeks. Each listen I find something more cool about it. They're coming to my town in a month or so which will be my first time seeing em. I'm psyched about that and prepared to blow some cash on merch. Be that as it may NECROT newest album is obviously their best. It's an all out captivating listen.

What we have here is the latest side project from Phil Landphil Hall most notable as the bassist for the thrash metal band MUNICIPAL WASTE. Of course if you're into extreme metal then you also know that Phil is involved in the death metal homage side project CANNABIS CORPSE. 

I'm not going to get into the latest MUNICIPAL WASTE yet. I'm still blasting it and that release can wait a week or two. But as far as CANNABIS CORPSE is concerned I like all of their albums and fuck people who worship BLOODBATH. Oh am I offending the Swedes and incensed mainstream  metal people? Pardon me, but hey go listen to VALLENFYRE instead. But anyways CANNABIS CORPSE rules.

So this is Phil's take on second wave Scandinavian black metal. He handles guitar and bass work on here. But along for the ride he's recruited his MUNICIPAL WASTE band-mate, Dave Witte, on drums. Witte is a perfect choice since he's one of the most versatile and accomplished drummers in metal. I mean look at his resume as well as his playing in bands of various genre styles. Add to that on vocals Phil has enlisted Finland's Matthias "Vieth" Lillmåns of FINNTROLL. Also credited for vocals is Quotidius.

OK so musically it's really not second wave BM. I'm hearing more late 90's, when the second wave was over, Swedish influenced BM. Maybe DARK FUNERAL minus the huge use of keyboards. It's a sound and style which was more accessible to mainstream metal fans back then. Overall it's a good recreation. That's not a negative rub by any means. 

I like the harsh screamed vocals, Witte is superb on drums. But the highlight on here is Phil Landphil Hall's guitar work. I mean his riffs on here (plus the guitar tone) are really cold, cruel and electrifying. Then he'll toss in some straight up metal soloing which surpasses the original genre sound. Of course he keeps with the whole tremolo picked standard as well. 

This debut release is eight song's worth. At first I was on the fence about this one. Mainly because I'm a big black metal fan and also weary of new bands recreating the past. Plus you've got modern production which can take away from the dark atmosphere this type of music is supposed to a trademark of. 

But after few listens and recognizing some of the folk song structures (hello FINNTROLL influence) added in. I was like, this is a great fuckin album. Hell I wish it was snowing outside. Obviously Phil is showing us all in metal fandom that he can do it all. 

He knows thrash and death metal. Add to that with IRON REAGAN he knows old 80's hardcore. Albeit kind of an easy feat but anyways. And now he's doing black metal which sounds pretty fuckin cool. The future of this latest musical project of his looks interesting. But hell yeah this stuff is great.

Here's the second full length by California's vintage death metal worshiping NECROT. I learned about these guys a few years ago via their debut, 2017's Blood Offerings. Two of their members are also in a cool West Coast DM act called VASTUM who I got into a while back. Nowadays any band, well almost, playing something sinister sounding as far as OSDM goes will get my attention. NECROT's debut just had a better edge to it for me to consider it great. 

So here we are with the all important sophomore album and obviously this three piece act was no fluke early on. First off Mortal not only continues the greatness of their debut album but it packs an even heavier punch. From the opener " Your Hell" to the eight minute plus album titled closer, this release is a perfect example of OSDM 101. In their case the band invites you in, ranks you over the coals and finally sacrifices you. It's all done in just slightly over thirty eight minutes.

Everything about Mortal is a highlight whether it's Luca Indrio's deep cavernous vocals, the filth ridden distorted riffs and choice solos by Sonny Reinhardt or the pummeling drum work by Chad Gailey. The songs on here are a mixed bag of militaristic death cadence, furious assaults as well as a slight technical complexity to the song arrangements. Something else of importance is how NECROT does not waste time on here with unnecessary intros or instro interludes of atmosphere to bulk up the run time. One of the best DM albums you'll hear this year.
