HEGONY - First Stab EP review

HEGONY - First Stab EP

Self Released

So if you're a regular reader of this blog (and frankly who isn't) then you know I'm a sucker when it comes to Polish death metal. First off I'm not Polish so it's not a heritage thing. I save that for my love of Dutch death metal. But as far as the Polish DM bands go it's a different appreciation.

Now of course various European nations and the United Kingdom all have some famous death metal scene histories. And yes I do like it all but for me the Polish bands all come across as being far more brutal and ferocious sounding then many of their contemporaries. Sure the early Swedish and Finnish bands all started out heavy as fuck. But when they moved onto more melodic styles the Poles just got meaner.

So here we have the debut EP from the Polish four piece HEGONY. It's basically a five song affair running a little over twenty minutes and has some great cover artwork. Now if you're a fan of Polish DM (and frankly who isn't) then while listening to this EP you're gonna name drop an influence or two. Yeah I know it's hard not to think VADER whenever hearing a death metal act from this nation. But musically there's that as well as some BEHEMOTH. Strangely enough I even hear some DEICIDE.

Musically their sound is typically brutal and deep with some of the riffs coming at you with a electric buzz. The bass is very prominent with some amazing drumming. To break things up there's a subtle dark ambiance that runs through a few cuts. Everything comes across as dark like an approaching storm and then you get caught up in it. Of course the vocals are bestial as if bellowed by a cave beast.

If there's one thing missing, and I've been hearing it a lot of late on other DM genre releases, it's the lack of guitar solos. Then again on here it's kinda made up for by nuanced riffing and various effects. All in all I look at this as HEGONY's demo. This originally came out late in 2019. Prior to that they only had a single. Right now they have one cut appearing on a Polish four band split release titled Underground Covenant - Anal Terror II. Any way if you're collector of Polish DM then here's one to check out because I believe what they do next is really going to be awesome.
