XPUS - In Umbra Mortis Sedent review

XPUS - In Umbra Mortis Sedent

Transcending Obscurity Records

Death, doom and gloom from Italy as far as this one goes. And it has some meaning considering the chi-com bat aids is going on. I kinda doubt XPUS will be having some hometown shows via the national lock down. But hey lets enjoy some dismal music for the times at hand. I mean what else you're going to do while self distancing.

XPUS are a three piece death metal act who like things old school. This release, their second full length, sounds pretty much like a death doom homage to various acts from the past. XPUS seem to avoid any personal innovation on their part. Their devotion leans more towards the USDM style all the way. We're talking a lot of down tuned heavy riffs. The vocals are of the bestial, cavernous and ghastly.

Strangely enough I was listening to Blessed are the Sick the other night. XPUS must be using that as a focal point. Unfortunately this recording is missing a few things like some fiery guitar solos to start with. Otherwise what you get is a decent affair that does conjure up the spirit of the original sinners.
