NORTHERN - Cabin Fever review

NORTHERN - Cabin Fever

Sinistrari Records

Hailing from the pagan vastlands of, New Hampshire? Well yeah it's fairly cold during Winter up there plus they still have some wilderness. But anyways this is my second time checking out this US black metal act. The first was back in 2018 with their debut Desolate Ways to Ultima Thule. That came out on Moribund Records. Now when it comes to that label I'll buy anything from em. With the exception of more VARDEN releases. I believe two of them are enough.

But anyways this band's debut was decent. I thought it sounded like four Americans on a pagan, viking, black metal trip to Scandinavia. That and they probably listened to copious amounts of BATHORY's Nordland Volumes 1 & 2 for inspiration. Now on this one the whole paganism thing is still there. Basically this is a black metal album based on the aspects of freezing your ass off and living in a cold environment. I'm kinda an expert on this because of spending two years living in Alaska.

You've got songs about and titled "Hypothermia", "Alcoholism" and of course the title track. Musically it's fairly old school in BM style. The riffs, whether slow or fast, are raw sounding without any modern touches. The vocals come across as cold and cruel. Hey it's the middle of Winter so music like this is kinda perfect.

As far as this sophomore album by NORTHERN goes. It's good and I like how the band has changed things up. It's got the whole pagan black metal Winter theme down pat. The songs, which honestly are only five with an intro and outro, do invoke some heavy seasonal atmosphere. It all makes me interested in what they'll do next. And that's a good thing.
