SUICIDE FOREST - Descend into Despair

Once again Folkvangr Records keeps the cassettes rolling in. Here we have a compilation by SUICIDE FOREST which is actually a one man black metal act out of Tucson, Arizona. Pardon the pun but Arizona is starting to be the new hotbed for USBM, especially one man BM acts. As long as they're not from California or New York City, right? Yeah anyways as I've said before so many times now the person(s) at Folkvangr Records discover these obscure blackened artists and repackage their releases on finely done cassettes. Not a bad gig.
As I mentioned earlier, Descend into Despair is a compilation. It's basically the artist's first two demos from 2016, Emptiness and Indifference. It's a decent package in order to discover some newer black metal and in this case it's more on the atmospheric or maybe even depressive side of the genre. The artist I keep mentioning is multi-instrumentalist Austin Kruger who is only twenty two years of age. And yet musically he sounds as if he's been at it for far more years than that.
Now with that said Descend into Despair is a far cry from being outstanding. Most of the song stuctures have been culled from many a past artist of this sub-genre. And with todays technology there are many one man black metal acts utilizing equipment to go beyond simplicity. In other words this sounds like something from a decade ago. We really don't need for that to become a trend. But on the up shot Kruger has some decent compositions on here, all long of course. I like the classical sound of the short keyboard instrumentals. In fact I really like his keyboard work on here as a whole. It adds depth to the obvious bleak depressive blackness. Obviously Kruger will have more for us in the future which will be worth watching out for.
