SACROFUCK - Swieta krew review

SACROFUCK - Swieta krew

Godz ov War Productions

Well with a name like SACROFUCK, what's not to like? Anyways the tagline on this is death metal. But after one listen you'll hear some grindcore and death thrash influences. I mean their drummer Soulreaper (aka: Jerzy Wojcik) has / is playing in some other thrash and grind acts. One of the guitarists plays in a thrash band. Everyone else has been involved in death metal or black metal for a while.

But hey SACROFUCK hail from Poland so you would expect something wild from one of the greatest extreme metal scenes in Europe. The skinny on em is as follows. The band started out in 2006 and mainly put out demos and short form releases for many years. The mainman of the band is Paplakathor (aka: Michal Paplak) whose been the guitarist/vocalist since it's beginning.

Over so many years the band finally got a cohesive line-up to put out their debut full length Ekstaza upodlenia in 2019. So this one here is it's follow-up. And just for starters when this album opens forth it's like someone grabbing you by the throat and holding ya as the torture issues. Yeah this is around thirty four minutes of Polish extreme metal punishment.

You've got the almost painful assault of the snare drums via grindcore influences. The riffs are down right death metal psychotic. The guitar soloing is part dive bomb into your psyche and part surgically slicing away at your humanity. And the vocals come across as if the guy is tripping on acid while having been set on fire.

SACROFUCK's Swieta krew is a hell bent on destruction release. As I mentioned in the beginning it's labeled as Death Metal but the grind influences are so evident as well as punishing that I have to say no. This is more great Polish grindcore and when this album ends you just push repeat so the pleasure of the pain continues on.

SOULCARRION - Enthrone Death review

SOULCARRION - Enthrone Death

Godz ov War Productions

This is what I'd call perfect late night after work death metal. SOULCARRION, who hail from the great nation of Poland, have a sound which comes from the darkest pits of oblivion. We're talking about something which invokes Lovecraftian nightmares. The sound created is a abattoir atmosphere of filth and piles of death. Imagine a putrid smell from a slaughterhouse which hasn't been cleaned in years.

This is the second album by this two piece act and I'll explain. SOULCARRION is basically Michal on guitars and bass plus Greg on lead guitar. The vocals (deep bestial growls) are provided by session singer Mateusz Sibila. The title track is sung by Vesper Locust. And the session drummer here is Darek Mlody. Hey guys ya got a band OK. Be that as it may there are times when you can hear an imbalance in the production.

But hey all in all I'd rather hear two guys from Poland following what MORTICIAN did decades ago.

AARDVARK - Tough Love review

AARDVARK - Tough Love

Dying Victims Productions

Honestly I can't believe I'm writing about a band named AARDVARK (says the guy who owns the complete discography of ANAL VOMIT). Alright just for starters this band hails from Australia. There are no aardvarks in that country. Aardvarks live in Africa. They eat ants and are a remnant of prehistoric mammals. Which is a great segway into talking about this band.

AARDVARK are a four piece act; two guitarists, one of em sings, plus a bass player and drummer. My previous mention of the word "prehistoric" fits in well with this act. Musically this band is a throwback to mid 70's hard fuckin rock. I'm talking 1975 to 1979 aka: just before the NWOBHM era kicked in. There are times when this release comes across like JUDAS PRIEST's Rocka Rolla. And guitarist / vocalist Ed Vaark does an early Halford vocal style well.

All in all Tough Love is an enjoyable album, says a guy who's 60. It's melodic hard rock from a time when bands like PRIEST, THIN LIZZY, UFO and SCORPIONS took listeners into something different in the mid 70's. I can't help but enjoy songs like "Destructor", "Fight Back" and the title cut. Yeah this is a perfect album for people who wanna go way back.

RIBSPREADER - Reap Humanity review

RIBSPREADER - Reap Humanity

Xtreem Music

How does a band creating a genre-centric sound/style of music (in this case Old School Swedish Death Metal) stay relevant after slightly over twenty years of existence? Well in this case you have mainman Rogga Johansson (vocals, guitars, bass) who has an unrelenting passion and conviction towards the music. It also helps to have some associates who care just as much as you in creating the music.

A few years ago I said that RIBSPREADER is Rogga Johansson and anyone else he can get to play the other instruments. On this tenth studio album it's Rogga still singing, doing the guitar riffs and playing bass. Along for the ride is still Jeramie Kling on drums (formerly of VENOM INC. and did drum duties in that last line-up of MASSACRE.) Add to that you've got guitarist Taylor Nordberg from DEICIDE (who was also amongst that last MASSACRE line-up.

So with one Swede and two Americans playing death metal in 2024 what would you expect. Well for me it's like Rogga Johansson takes over MORBID ANGEL and shows em how to play death metal again. Obviously when Rogga was doing the whole MASSACRE thing a few years back he was taking notes. One basic principle he got was a good mix of atmosphere, brutality and fuckin speed. Reap Humanity is all of that. I wish that I was standing in the audience watching the band play this album in full. I could see the crowd going apeshit crazy.

Musically this is full on slam pit action whether just moshing along or hell bent violent pit action. You've got nine songs in thirty six minutes which is perfect for attention time. Every song grabs your attention to the hilt. Rogga, as always, relies on a mix of DM vocal styles whether it's the brutal grunts, the hate filled baritone screams or the diabolical almost spoken wordings. Of course his guitar riffs are powerful, sick as well as twisted.

Add to that Jeramie Kling's drum work on here is amazing. Then again I thought that when he was pounding for WOMBBATH as well as VENOM INC. I might've said it before but it bares repeating. Jeramie Kling is one of the most versatile drummers in Metal today. Now as far as the lead guitar work goes, Taylor Nordberg (who's in DEICIDE now) lays down some lines which are more of a background atmospheric take. While other times he's firing on along side with the rhythms or adding some wicked solos that add to the sinister sound.

All in all as much as I like what RIBSPREADER has done in the past. I really like this album a lot. It's one of those albums that ten years from now you're gonna still wanna blast till the neighbors call the cops on ya. Hell Fuckin Yeah!

CORPSEVORE - Feed The Plague EP review

CORPSEVORE - Feed The Plague EP

Horror Pain Gore Death Productions

Here's my irony check for the month. Let me explain, every month I dedicate time to blasting old stuff with a specific topic. January has been all about old demos mostly death metal stuff. So of course I was listening to demos by NECROVORE and ROTTREVORE. So here we have another "vore" band. Actually I'm surprised the name hasn't been used before but anyways.

So here we have the debut release by CORPSEVORE which in their own words (from the Facebook page) is "Vegan grinding death metal from France". From what I can gather this is a side project by one of the guitarists from the French death doom band WINTEREVE.

Musically it's got the crunch of early Swede Death with a decent grindcore head-bang. Think NIHILIST's Premature Autopsy gets into a head to head collision with CARCASS's Flesh Ripping Sonic Torment. If you're a grind head who likes some DM brutality then you'll like it.

Personally I don't get into much of the lyrical content of bands but with this one it needs to be said. If you're part of that "meat is murder' crowd then this is right up your alley. As for me I don't care about anyone's dietary habits or convictions. Just don't tell me I can't eat a cheese steak.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - Transcending Obscurity Records 2024 Label Sampler

VARIOUS ARTISTS - Transcending Obscurity Records 2024 Label Sampler

Transcending Obscurity Records

As any reader of this blog knows (and frankly who isn't) I am a big fan of Transcending Obscurity Records. Does that make me bias when it comes to writing about their releases? Well maybe, when it comes to this label I really like their straight up death metal and grindcore releases the most. In my end of year favorite forty albums of 2023 I had three of their releases in my top ten. Nine altogether in the top forty so there you go.

Now nine releases means nothing to a label that released more than that. As always if I like something then I really like it. If I don't care for it then I just move on. I'm not into the "do the slag" bullshit. So with that said Transcending Obscurity Records puts out a sampler compilation each year to let fans know what's coming out in that year. As well as include something you might've missed the year before.

This year's sampler is amazing as you can see here:

1. DISKORD (Norway) - Shivering, As We Shed Our Hides

2. REPLICANT (US) - Orgasm Of Bereavement

3. CARNOPHAGE (Turkey) - Underneath The Horrendous One

27. SWELLING REPULSION (International) - Fatally Misguided

28. FEBRUUS (Sweden) - The Price of Enterprice

29. MISANTHROPY (US) - The All-Devouring

There's some bands on here that I'm interested in hearing more from as well as some I'll pass on. But that's the way these comps are all about. Freedom of choice is the thing and it's a free compilation. So check it out.

MASTER - Saints Dispelled review

MASTER - Saints Dispelled

Hammerheart Records

First off I need to give a shout out to Hammerheart Records because over the past couple of years they've rejuvenated the careers of many old school bands. And now here we have MASTER from way back when. Ironically I was blasting the DEATH STRIKE CD two weeks ago. This is the first MASTER full length in quite a while. In all honesty I haven't kept up with the band in many years. Now I do like the death metal releases Paul Speckmann was doing with Rogga Johansson (aka: Johansson & Speckmann). But hey let's dive in.

As far as performances go on here I have to say Paul Speckmann sounds sick as fuck as ever on vocals. Guitarist Alex Nejezchleba is absolutely amazing with his riffs as well as dive bomb solos. And fuckin drummer Peter Bajci is phenomenal behind the kit. The musicianship is amazing but the music? Saints Dispelled sounds more like a band doing a wanna-be late 80's hardcore release. What death thrash sounds, of which MASTER was known for, are minimal. Most of the songs on here are hardcore.

Now sure I wasn't expecting something exactly old school MASTER. But hey my last album by em, "An Epiphany of Hate" from 2016, was still great death thrash. Be that as it may I'm sure young people will like this one a lot. "Dude it's like old school hardcore" spoken by someone who was born in the 2000's and thinks GREEN DAY is punk rock.

Personally the best song on this release is the bonus track "Alienation of Insanity". That's the MASTER I know albeit some death n roll but it's still good.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - 25 Anniversary of Odium Records Compilation

VARIOUS ARTISTS - 25 Anniversary of Odium Records Compilation

Odium Records

Wanna hear some great Black Metal? Of course you do and the name Odium Records should not be new to you. I've been a fan of this label for a while. BLACK ALTAR was the band that started me on my journey with em. It doesn't seem like 25 years has passed but that's the way it is and a celebration is in order.

Now for those of you who don't know. Odium Records is a small independent label that started out years ago in Poland. The label was founded by Shadow (aka: Dariusz Sieradzki) from BLACK ALTAR. They would later relocate to England. Their focus early on was to shed some light on Black Metal from the pagan vastlands. Although as time moved on they would showcase acts from other countries.

Although the label puts out plenty of full lengths. One cool thing about Odium Records is their use of the split EP short form release. In that you pick up the release for the band you do know and get a second you may or may not know but is cool as well. Many labels do this but Odium has done a fairly good job of it in my not so humble opinion.

So with that all said the label is celebrating 25 years since their first release by putting out a free sampler compilation. The comp will be presented in two forms. One form will be a free physical CD with 15 bands. That will be distributed to various magazines in order to include it in their pages as a gift to readers. I don't know which print media that will be. But the sampler CD will also be included with label orders.

The second format you can check out is on the label's Bandcamp page. On there you'll get a full twenty songs worth of amazing music. The track listing is as follows:

1. Ofermod - "Atavistic Chants of Levitation"

2. HYL – "Into the Unknown"

3. Vulture Lord – “Bloodbound Militia”

4. Black Altar – “Via Draconis”

5. Serpents Oath – “Blood Covenant”

6. Mephorash – “Riphyon- The Tree of Assiyah Putrescent”

7. Devilpriest – “Adoration/Shem-ham-forash”

8. Acherontas – “Intra Psyche”

9. Kriegsgott – “H84 All”

10. HILD – “Hrist”

11. Vincent Crowley – “La Muerte”

12. Beastcraft - "Deathcraft and Necromancy"

13. Enshadowed – “Entropy of Men”

14.Hell-Born – “Axis of Decay”

15. Varathron – “Arawn's Reich”

16. Kirkebrann - "Faux Pas"

17. Akrotheism - "Take Us to Swine"

18. Visegard - "Hvor Gausta Rar"

19. RAUS! - "RAUS!"

20. Kaoskult - "The New Aeon"

Now that's a cool line-up of bands. This comp originally came out on December 29, 2023 but is worth talking about now since this is when it'll be distributed. So hey Devoted to the Devil's Music, get it!

COLTRE - To Watch with Hands to Touch with Eyes review

COLTRE - To Watch with Hands to Touch with Eyes

Dying Victims Productions

The tagline on this one was New Wave of British Heavy Metal albeit in 2024. But after a few plays I can tell ya (from personal experience) this comes off as pre-NWOBHM aka: mid 1970's sounding hard rock. So sit back and relax as I try to make sense of this to you.

First off COLTRE are a new four piece act from London, England. This is their debut full length. Prior to this the band put out a five song EP in 2020 titled Under the Influence. Trust me if you like this then you'll want to get that one as well. Line-up wise you've got two guitarists, a bass player and drummer. One of the guitarist sings. How 70's is that?

Now not only does COLTRE come off sounding as something from my early listening ears in the mid 70's. But the production on here is spot on 1970's analog. Yeah this comes off as some rare 70's act that some fuck at a record convention wants a $100 for. Then there's the cover art which to me looks Prog especially with the title.

But hey as I always say it's all about the music. So if you're into 70'S era sounds by THIN LIZZY, UFO, BLUE OYSTER CULT and even some JUDAS PRIEST then you're gonna like this one. For me I like it but there are some obvious rip offs to contend with. One example is the third cut "Rat Race". Sure it's a great homage to early UFO and a damm good track. But little did I know that the latter half of this album would be a total ode to UFO especially the final cut "Oblivion".

Do you like THIN LIZZY? Then you'll love "Friends Aren't Electric" since it has the bass riff from "Emerald". Add to that I'd swear that the title cut borrows riffs from one of BLUE OYSTER CULT's first three albums. But hey be thankful because COLTRE are not GHOST. And all in all despite this old man's obvious points this is a pretty damm good album.

For me COLTRE gets huge nostalgia points simply because the music is beautifully done. There's plenty of old school twin guitar lead work. Marco Stamigna has a calm cool and convincing heart felt delivery to his vocals. The rhythm section delivers with thick bass lines as well as cool drum work.

I mean how can you fault a band when their opening cut "Feast of the Outcast" reminds ya of DEEP PURPLE minus Jon Lord's  Hammond organ. Yeah this is damm good.

IRON CURTAIN - Savage Dawn review

IRON CURTAIN -  Savage Dawn

Dying Victims Productions

When I woke up this morning it was 2024 but this Spanish band still believes it's somewhere around 1987 and hell yeah that's a good thing. To put it plainly IRON CURTAIN are defenders of the 80's metal faith. And in a world where people try to destroy or at least alter the past, we need bands like this.

No, IRON CURTAIN are not another "wannabe 80's" revival band. Actually they've been around since 2007, probably when you were still in your Dad's balls. Since that time they've showed an affinity towards the era of 80's metal which was NWOBHM, Speed Metal and Thrash.

So with all of that said here we have the band's fifth full length. Now of course they have a song on here titled "Thy Wolf" which I could say is great and good fuckin night. But hey there's a lot of great songs on here that capture not only an era but a feeling. I mean I'm 60 and after hearing this I'm not gonna pull out an old EXCITER or RAVEN album and blast it for nostalgia. Personally I'd rather blast this.

Savage Dawn is a ten song album but it's actually eight songs with an intro and outro. Of those eight proper songs they're all pretty damm good. Personally I like the speed metal MOTORHEAD vibes of "Jericho Trumpet (Stuka)" as well as "Rattlesnake". Add to that the NWOBHM bleeding of openers "Devil's Eyes" followed up by the amazing "Gypsy Rocker". And of course a latter favorite "Evil Is Everywhere" which would be considered a deep track.

I've said it before but it bares repeating. I don't really care about "anticipated" releases by classic metal acts from the past. Why should I when I can hear shredding guitar lines, heavy opening bass lines and pure as fuck rocking cuts by modern day bands like IRON CURTAIN. This is a great fuckin album.

TOXIKULL - Under The Southern Light review

TOXIKULL - Under The Southern Light

Dying Victims Productions

While other metal media outlets are highly anticipating new albums by some metal gods of the 80's. This four piece act from Portugal are ready for you to remember the 1980's metal scene and sounds in their own way. TOXIKULL are a band who a few years back caught my attention with their second album, Cursed and Punished, from 2019. Back then they had one foot in the speed metal arena with the other in the whole 80's metal craze.

Fast forward to 2024 and TOXIKULL are kicking ass on this their third album. I mean the opening track on here, "Night Shadows", is a total ripper. And with Lex Thunder giving an amazing vocal performance with some killer riffs hell yeah this track rules. Just for the record Lex Thunder is one of the best metal vocalists in these modern times. The guy's got that mid to high range and screams like a banshee.

Under The Southern Light is ten tracks worth of classic sounding 80's metal remembrance. One cut, "Ghost of a Dream" is an instrumental and the final cut, "Filhos do Metal", is a XEQUE-MATE cover. But everything inbetween fuckin rules! The title cut just screams 1984 and it's real metal, not that hair metal crap. I'm at a lack for who TOXIKULL remind me of from back then. Maybe no one directly but it could be a combination of influences that make this sound fresh.

If there's one thing that pisses me off with older metal fans, and I know plenty of em, is their lack of excepting or even trying to find stuff that's new. I remember the 80's full well and yeah there was some great music. But I didn't stop there instead I kept going in search of that type of stuff. Hell listen to "Knights of Leather" from this album and tell me why Grunge killed your scene again, loser.

Yeah this third album by TOXIKULL fuckin rules. It's a modern throwback to a time I certainly loved. Musically it's more original than some older bands trying to keep going.

REPLICANT - Infinite Mortality review

REPLICANT - Infinite Mortality

Transcending Obscurity Records

While listening to this New Jersey band's third album I couldn't help but think how some of these cuts would've made a great soundtrack to a 2023 year in review video. I mean this is what you get with dissonant death metal. No matter the lyrics you'll hear music with sounds reminding you of other things on your mind. Yes current events are troublesome but when amplified by a three piece death metal band it can get worse.

For example the trudging riffs remind you of the sounds of mechanized military war machines. Add to that the concussive percussion and dive bomb solos comes across like artillery blasts. Then again we are a world at war. The angry vocals or those wails of pain remind one of the turmoil we face in the wars over culture and politics. You'll have one side screaming at one another. While on the other side it's people screaming to just stop and leave us alone. Then when the band dials down to some death doom atmospherics just wait till you feel the walls are closing in on you.

Yeah music like this gives you plenty to ponder but then that's what REPLICANT is all about. I learned that a few years back when I heard their second album, Malignant Reality, which came out in 2021 and also on Transcending Obscurity Records. What they did on that record was definitely interesting as well as memorable (more like nightmarish). On this latest one they've taken their formula and pushed it further into the diabolical abyss of one's imagination. But before I go on about their formula there's a reassessment I need to make since last time around.

If you live by an ocean then you'll understand. You ever stand on a shore line and look out to the sea to view some rock formation at low tide. Then when the tide comes in those rocks are covered from view. To me that's what this whole Avant-garde tech death metal scene has become over the past few years. So as much as I'd like what REPLICANT is doing on here. In a short while they'll be a few more coming in with the tide. And nothing against Transcending Obscurity Records but they do have a roster full of bands doing the same thing. There's another label who I won't mention but I use to love until almost every release they've put out in the past two years sounds like the same band.

But hey to give REPLICANT their due on here they're still a tech death band that doesn't drive me into an ADD frenzy (says the guy who loves grindcore). Infinite Mortality is like staring into a vortex but instead of being greeted by brutality it's more comforting. Instead of a reached out hand it's still a horned fist but you're like cool I'll come in. Then comes the punishment of riff variety, a background of atmospheric lead work as well as dive bomb solos. Add to that the various vocal styling between pain, more pain, absolute misery and gutt-wrenching anger. Yeah it's like watching the news albeit comforting.

Every night when I get off of work. I sit down at the bar with one of my co-worker friends. We drink a beer or two (or three) and talk about the shift, the next day's worth of bullshit and laugh. While this is going on the bartender is playing horrible fuckin music. That's when I look at my friend and say "this is why I go home and listen to death metal." Tonight I came home and listened to REPLICANT's Infinite Mortality for the tenth time and the year is looking good for Death Metal until.......

MEGA COLOSSUS - Showdown review

MEGA COLOSSUS - Showdown

Cruz del Sur Music

Raleigh, North Carolina's own traditional metal band comes out with their fourth full length since starting out back in the mid 2000s. In all honesty I've never written about this band nor have I seen em live over the years. So hey no hometown bias alert on my part. I do remember years ago when they first started out and the local music media were hyping the hell out of em. Then again the local music media were a bunch of hipsters.

Be that as it is this latest from MEGA COLOSSUS is a melodic power metal sounding release. I mean sure there's plenty of MAIDEN-esque galloping riffs but also some 70's hard rock riffage like on the title cut. There are times listening to this when I'm thinking "imagine when Metal actually rocked." I mean lead vocalist Sean Buchanan can wail.

Musically this is cool as far as old Power Metal meets some damm good 80's Metal standards and toss in some DRAGONFORCE influence. There's plenty of highlights like the amazing guitar solo work, which is eclectic as hell, the harmonies and the wild song structures will capture your ears to the fullest. And hey like I said earlier the vocals are amazing.

The sad truth is that MEGA COLOSSUS is a band that should be playing at WACKEN but will most likely be playing a half empty club here in Raleigh. Showdown, despite it's horrible cover artwork, should be something that any power metal fan will love.
