HIGHRIDER - Roll For Initiative review

HIGHRIDER - Roll For Initiative
The Sign Records

OK for the life of me I just can't remember a crossover act from the past having keyboards / organ as a major part of their sound. And yet here we have the debut full-length album by the Swedish heavy metal act, HIGHRIDER, doing it as if nothing's unusual about it. Of course that was just the opening track "Nihilist Lament" which was enough for me to sit up straight.

Roll For Initiative consists of eight tracks that mix thrash, metal, 70's hard rock, doom, punk and hardcore or if you will crossover. Essentially this Gothenburg four piece has enough talent to create an overall sound and style that would appeal to everyone whether they're into metal or punk/hardcore. Trust me on that one because it's a fuckin feat. Take the song "The Greater Monkey" for example. It's like DEEP PURPLE meets DRI with Tim Baker of CIRITH UNGOL doing his best angst ridden hardcore style vocals.

This whole album follows the same pattern throughout. They wanna be fast, they wanna sound angry and yet their feet are planted in other places. But yes it does sound fuckin fantastic. One of the best albums you'll ever hear this year.
