REVULSION - Self Titled
Transcending Obscurity Records
Over the years I've enjoyed sharing my thoughts with others about the greatness of bands from the Finnish metal scene. For the most part it's particularly from the black metal or doom genres. But whenever death metal comes into play from that great nation. You know it's always going to be good as well as memorable.
It's beginning to be a fixture that every year one or two death metal releases from Finnish bands ends up on genre fans' plate of favorites. Whether this self titled release by REVULSION ends up the same way is too early to tell at this time of the year. But after giving it a few listens I'd say it's completely worthy of a spot.
Just learning about this band's history was enough to believe perseverance always achieves greatness as an end result. REVULSION actually started out in 2005, put out a demo in 2010 and followed that up with an EP a year later. From that point the band was quiet until 2016 when they released a two song single. Once again the band was quiet for a while until this full length release.
The album starts out with "Last Echoes of Life" a song which was on their 2016 single. From the onset you realize this one is gonna be an ugly, dirty dragged out affair. Throughout the release there's plenty of heavy handed riffs, powerfully executed bass lines as well as rapid fire drumming. In other words REVULSION checks all the boxes when it comes to death metal 101 class. Vocals are of the deep growl variety.
Some standouts for me at least were "Walls" with it's infectious headbanging groove. "Wastelands" has a cool fast/medium groove tempo which is perfect for a crowd to get moving to. "Last Echoes of Life" definitely invites the listener into a realm of death metal hostility. "Unravel" has an epic style going for it. Plenty of grandiose riffing fill the song accompanied with a mighty blast-beated pummeling. Overall REVULSION's debut album is damm good from beginning to end.
