MEDIUM - Self Titled review

MEDIUM - Self Titled

Transcending Obscurity Records

MEDIUM are a fairly new band outta Argentina. The band originally put this out themselves in 2018. So of course the good people at Transcending Obscurity Records took notice and released it now. Hell maybe the band has something new in the works and this is a good primer for that. Who knows?

Now the tagline on this is grindcore/crust. After listening to this I can say that none of these seven songs sound grindcore. As far as the crust term goes. Well regular readers of SFM666, and frankly who isn't, will know that I don't adhere to that term because the term is a reference to being influenced by the English hardcore act DISCHARGE. As well as the term used by anarcho punks back in the late 80's who wanted to separate themselves from the hardcore punk scene over politics.

If anything MEDIUM come across as a mix of death thrash and decent hardcore which might be a nod to the 90's. There's also some subtle DECEASED influence which I think is cool as fuck. The vocals have that bloody death thrash screamed style which you can never get enough of. A lot of these cuts have some galloping rhythms with added dynamic drumming that gives you that metal rush. The guitar soloing is not stand out but flows with the riffage.

In the end this is an enjoyable release. This band cannot be pigeonholed by genre taglines. They're fuckin Metal and that's why we need bands like MEDIUM more than ever. I'm looking forward to hearing them again.
