THRONEHAMMER - Usurper of the Oaken Throne review
THRONEHAMMER - Usurper of the Oaken Throne
The Church Within Records
Seeing that this one is six songs chiming in at close to two hours of music, doom by the way. I was ready to take a week off of work in order to engross myself in the THRONEHAMMER experience. Just for the record THRONEHAMMER are a three piece international act. It features on vocals Kat Shevil Gillham from England. You also have multi-instrumentalists Stuart West (guitars & synths) and Tim Schmidt (bass & drums) both from Germany.
As far as their brand of doom goes THRONEHAMMER basically take standard doom and sludge metal to it's fullest extent then tweak it a bit. For starters Gillham has a unique vocal style. She can throw in a harsh growl or rasp with ease but her clean singing voice is kinda deadpan and dry. But then she can take the range up a few octives. Her best attribute is that she's not generic airy sounding.
Now for the music it's basically sludgey riffs that exert enough power to hold you in their grip even for an extended time. Drum work is dynamic. When the synths are applied things do take on another dimension. Personally I was hoping for more synth action in order to give a symphonic touch. I'd also say some interesting guitar soloing would've helped break the monotony. Still this is only their full length debut so who knows what the future holds.
