AKURION - Come Forth to Me review

AKURION - Come Forth to Me

Redefining Darkness Records

As far as super-groups go I can take em or leave em. I really don't see the hype of the whole idea. Now when it comes to tech death my line of departure starts when the music becomes headache inducing guitar freak-outs or jazz interludes. Thankfully this is not that at all. In fact the brutal side of the music here shines and reminds you of the early days of tech death which wasn't a fuckin joke.

AKURION is a Canadian band made up of present and former members of bands like CATTLE DECAPITATION, CRYPTOPSY, NEURAXIS, AUGURY as well as other lesser known acts. Nothing against those other bands. The band members here include Mike DiSalvo on vocals, guitarist Rob Milley, Oli Pinard handles bass duties and finally there's Tommy McKinnon on drums. And if you think those guys are cool you should see the who's who of guests on here. It's like We Are The World Canada.

Now with all of that said it's time for the music. I was expecting something along the lines of a combined influence by all of the bands these guys were/are in. Big surprise it's not like that at all. AKURION come forth with an older sound which glues you to the wall as far as a listening experience. The song structures are amazing as in whatafuck are they going to do next. Rob Milley is such a creative guitarist with fantastic riffs as well as intricate soloing.

Hats off to Tommy McKinnon's organic style of drum work. The guy punishes when needed then adds some subtle but major beat delivering. All of that is cool. The vocals are decently barked. The length of this album does come into question for me. Almost an hour's worth of tech death plus proggy moments equals wears on me. But for someone else this will be some classic Canadian tech death to savor.
