DREAD SOVEREIGN - Alchemical Warfare review

DREAD SOVEREIGN - Alchemical Warfare

Metal Blade Records

So some years ago when I heard this band's 2013 debut EP, Pray to the Devil in Man, I was excited as fuck. You see this three piece act started out with Alan Averill on bass and vocals plus Simon O'Laoghaire on drums. Both of these guys are in the great Irish black metal act PRIMORDIAL, who I'm a huge fan of. Their extraordinary guitarist goes by the name Bones. Also this little o'l side project was all about Doom Metal.

Since then the band has released three full lengths with this one being their third. Also Simon O'Laoghaire has left the band only to be replaced by the also amazing Johnny King who plays with CONAN. Now as far as their previous full lengths go well they're OK as far as repeating past doom legend influences go. Basically it was PRIMORDIAL gone doom which ain't bad.

So with this new one I was expecting another dust collector dink because I'd rather hear PRIMORDIAL. But no since finally guitarist Bones has been let loose from the shackles of influential pasts in order to cut a rug of his own. Sure there's plenty of SABBATH-ian doom style going on here. But with the wild song structures, riff salad overtures and melodic soloing damm this is good.

Combine it all with the powerful drum work, outstanding vocals and the familiar yet melodic riff work ah yeah this is outstanding. You've got eight great doom / heavy metal cuts and the ninth one being a decent hardcore style BATHORY cover.
