HYDRA - Beyond Life and Death review

HYDRA - Beyond Life and Death

Piranha Music

The tagline for this release was Polish stoner doom. OK so for the past few years when it came to stoner doom/rock from Poland I've always touted DOPELORD as the best. And that's not just from their nation. I think DOPELORD's releases are the best from the genre all around. So I wondered if HYDRA were going to be something similar. Thankfully they're not.

Yes HYDRA like their SABBATH-ian grooves but they're sound is more rooted in plain old heavy sounding doom than say just another stoner band. I'd say THE GATES OF SLUMBER, APOSTLE OF SOLITUDE from the US or GRAND MAGUS from Sweden as references. We're talking heavy with a healthy dose of traditional metal.

On this the band's second full length this four piece act deliver five cuts, some of which are long epic numbers. I kinda like those ones the best. The basic highlights here are the clean vocals, cool guitar work and a solid rhythm section. So you have a band firing on all cylinders which makes this album damm good. There's also added organ which is another highlight.

From the opener "Prophetic Dreams", HYDRA shows off how well they employ melody with the heaviness. Longer cuts like "On the Edge of Time" and "With the Devil Hand in Hand" break out the SABBATH-ian touches full scale. Plus the band adds plenty of their own dynamic style. All in all HYDRA's sophomore album is just about a perfect release for Doom fans out there, myself included.
