MORTUUS CADAVER - Cemetery Debauchery review

MORTUUS CADAVER - Cemetery Debauchery

Prior Satanae Production

So for decades now I've made it obviously clear that I'm a huge fan of Polish death metal. Mainly because I think VADER are one of the greatest bands of the genre. But hey they've got so many cool sounding bands. Now if you played this release and asked me where they were from I would not say Poland.

MORTUUS CADAVER who hail from that great nation do not sound like their countryman. Actually they sound like they came from somewhere in the US Midwest. Either way this is great fuckin sounding death doom. This is also the band's debut full length. MORTUUS CADAVER is a three piece act who started out a few years ago. The band members also share membership in another death doom act IMPURE DECLARATION.

So musically you've got six original cuts and a cover of NUNSLAUGHTER's "Raid the Convent". Good choice for a cover and they do it well since I am a NUNSLAUGHTER fan. but sound-wise MORTUUS CADAVER are all about the mid tempo grooves, violent sounding riffage and slow dirges. Their vocalist and bassist (who you can actually hear well) has that sick burnt throat sound. He'll even throw in a scream or two.

There are no guitar solos, atmospheric breaks or production foolery. This is as basic and raw as it gets for old school death metal and I like it a lot. I would've liked some dive bomb type soloing but instead there's a few bass heavy moments. All in all a amazing release with killer cover artwork to boot.

HELLFROST AND FIRE - Fire, Frost and Hell review

HELLFROST AND FIRE - Fire, Frost and Hell

Transcending Obscurity Records

Regular readers of this blog (and frankly who isn't) will know I'm a huge fan of David Ingram. I mean he is the voice to the English death metal institution BENEDICTION. Let's not forget the band's killer reunion album Scriptures from 2020. But Ingram has been busy with some side bands as well that I've been a fan of. Most notably is DOWN AMONG THE DEAD MEN which he's been part of for a few years now.

Here we have Dave's latest project HELLFROST AND FIRE. Along with Dave on vocals you've got Rick DeMusis handling guitars/bass and Travis Ruvo on drums. Musically this is a simple run through of old school death metal brutality. Dave roars along like an angry beast. DeMusis delivers with some cool albeit familiar sounding riffs. His solos are well done without over doing it. Ruvo's drumwork is adequate.

This ten song outing is a mixed bag of slow plodding ragers and mid paced groove numbers. I've gotta say "Black Secrets in the Splintering Walls", "Meridian's Acquisition" and "The Lost King and the Heir Apparent" are my favorite cuts off of this release. The bottom line here is if you're a David Ingram fan then this is a mandatory release to get.

BOOTES VOID - C.O.L.D. review

BOOTES VOID - C.O.L.D.

Self Released

For years now I've said that black metal can be educational. Case in point, for years I've thought that the coldest thing in the universe was my ex-wife's stare. But now I've learned I was wrong. This band is named after a region of space that contains very few galaxies. It's also known as the great nothing as in no light and very cold. It is located in the vicinity of the constellation Bootes, hence its name. So with that knowledge I can say my ex-wife comes in second as far as coldness.

Be that as it may this band hails from Germany, more specifically Wurzburg, Bavaria. Now if you haven't figured it out yet with the teasers: cold and darkness. Yeah this is black metal. The big surprise here is that it's very melodic in style. We're talking late 90's era. The harshest part of this release are the vocals. The guy has a perfect rasp pitch.

Otherwise this debut album by the band is decent sounding in a nostalgia sense. The tremolo picked melodies on these seven cuts are cool. BOOTES VOID are a five piece so the twin guitar attack adds that usual touch of crushing deviance. Most of this is tremolo picked runs with pounding snare drum work. Then again the guitar riffs take you out into another realm. Yeah it's all standard stuff but decent.

SCORPIONS - Rock Believer review

SCORPIONS - Rock Believer

Vertigo Records

OK let's get the obligatory personal history with the band out of the way. I got into the SCORPIONS in the mid-70's. In Trance from 1975 was my first album by them. And yeah I'm a Uli Jon Roth era SCORPION's fan first. Now as far as the Matthias Jabs era goes I liked those early albums up to Love at First Sting from 1984. After that I didn't care about em anymore.

So why am I bothering with this album after all of these years? Well supposedly this was the band giving a try at reliving some past glory. That glory was trying to do an 80's era style album. Plus over the past 3 to 4 years there have been a few legacy bands releasing some decent material. So hey why not the SCORPIONS, right? Ah well that would be a big fat NO!

This nineteenth full-length by the band has them grasping for some nostalgic but missing horribly. The eleven songs on here, sixteen if you pony up for the 2xCD deluxe edition, are decent hard rock sounding tunes. As far as any highlights go Matthias Jabs can still come up with a halfway decent solo. There's some cool riffs by Rudolf Schenker as well as some old tricks he's pulled out. Klaus can still sing.

But for me it's the weak songs and corny song titles that leave me going BLAH! For example opener "Gas in the Tank", ah yeah some of ya are in your 70's. "Roots in My Boots", really what "lead in my pencil" didn't cut it? The title track is horrible. I don't know why they bothered to record Mikkey Dee's drumming on here. A drum machine could've done the same job.

I will give some props to songs like "Peacemaker", the best song on the album. "When I Lay My Bones to Rest" at least allows Pawel Maciwoda to show off his bass vibe. Damm I miss Francis Buchholz, a very good bass player. The second CD, if you get the deluxe version, has four more cuts plus an acoustic version of the ballad "When You Know (Where You Come From)". Once again the cuts are totally average. The bottom line is that the band cannot write hard hitting music like they use to. They can play well but that's about it.

VERMORD - Nostalgic Predictions review

VERMORD - Nostalgic Predictions

Self Released

The sub genre of blackened death metal has over the past couple of decades been twisted into knots. What I mean is that bands from the sub genre can be melodic or crushing. I've heard proggy stuff in recent years along with adventures in tech death territory. All of what I've just described applies to this release.

This is the debut album by Maryland's VERMORD. What you'll get here is blackened death metal which is without a doubt ferocious, melodic at certain times, full on tech death and there's some actual prog moments. To be honest with ya I've had a disturbing feeling about this release over the past week and a half.

First off I like the fact that this band can draw from all of those styles and create song structures that meld well together. On the other hand there's some overdone madness which deters from the bludgeoning quality. After a short intro the torment enters in and for a few cuts it's hang onto your soul. But from that point onward the questions start to enfold.

Overall this release reminds me of an extreme metal mulligan stew. Everything goes into the pot. Sure it's edible but other than some stand out chunks the rest is an after thought. VERMORD hit perfection on many cuts like "Nostalgic Predictions", "Blessed by Wolves" and "Odyssey". We're talking great instrument execution with a combo of vocal styles, gruff or harsh in your face. As far as everything else goes well it keeps this engine moving.

ERIC WAGNER - In The Lonely Light of Mourning review

ERIC WAGNER - In The Lonely Light of Mourning

Cruz Del Sur Music

In the summer of 2021 the Doom Metal universe lost one of it's greatest voices. Eric Wagner the singer/frontman of TROUBLE, The SKULL and BLACKFINGER passed away in August of that year. If you were into his music then you know his passing was a major loss. He will not be forgotten by us fans. This solo album he did was completed and delivered to the label a month before his untimely death. It was supposed to come out in November 2021 but the release date was moved to March 2022.

From what I've read this solo album was very important to Eric. It was a work in progress for a number of years. He brought in friends/former band mates from the Doom metal community to help out. As far as they go you've got drummer Dave Snyder from TROUBLE and BLACKFINGER. Dave was also co-writer on a number of these tunes. Then there's guitarist Chuck Robinson also from TROUBLE, BLACKFINGER and the THE SKULL. Bassist Sean McAllister from TROUBLE. Bassist Ron Holzner who was also in TROUBLE and the SKULL. Also there's Victor Griffin from PENTAGRAM.

Listening to this, now a posthumous release, was kinda tough since Eric hasn't even been gone for a year. To make matters worse there are too many songs that reference death. Sure it's doom but some songs just cut too close to the reality of Eric's passing. For example opener "Rest in Piece" is a great song in the whole TROUBLE /THE SKULL tradition. But damm it hits ya. Obviously most of this album is filled with material which will appeal to long time fans. There's only a few cuts which take on a melancholy approach. "If You Lost It All" with cello player Brian Gaona almost sounds like Bowie. The title cut follows suit in it's mournful approach. It's also a highlight of the album.

In The Lonely Light of Mourning is an amazing release and sadly the last one of original material we'll ever hear again from Eric Wagner.

CORPSESSED - Succumb To Rot

CORPSESSED - Succumb To Rot

Dark Descent Records

Alright it's time for a "bias alert" because I'm an honest SOB. I'm a long time fan of Dark Descent Records. My CD collection shows it. Hell my death metal CD collection shows it. I mean years ago in the end of year favorites I'd rank the label number one simply because every release I heard I bought and they would be in my top favorites.

Although of late, say the past three years, I've only gotten four releases a year by em. So when I saw this album by Finland's CORPSESSED come in for review, I was like waitaminute. I went into the stacks and pulled out their Abysmal Thresholds from 2014. Yeah another Dark Descent Records release. But hey I've also got Impetus of Death from 2018. I missed out on the band's last one, Beyond Abysmal Thresholds, from 2019.

Be that as it may here we have another cool album by CORPSESSED who are purveyors of the old school Finnish death metal/death doom and gloom style. Imagine vocals sung by a bear just awakened after hibernation. You got riffs and rhythms that trudge along like a hungry beast. This is horrific sounding death doom hunting to eat you. I mean "Death Stench Effluvium" give me a break!

What we have here are eight cuts of relentless stench driven hostility. And I love every thirty-six plus minutes of it. CORPSESSED have been around for fifteen years now. To me this is the best they've ever done.

FRIGHT - Self Titled EP review

FRIGHT - Self Titled EP

Horror Pain Gore Death Productions

So this release came under the genre moniker of Hardcore. Now as someone who knows what hardcore was in the original 80's era I cringe these days whenever I see a band is supposed to be it. 99.9% of the time they're metalcore or a mixed soup of genres with grindcore being the strongest ingredient. Then this one comes down the pike and I'm like, hmmmm?

What we have here is the debut EP by a Philadelphia/New Jersey outfit which is kinda a seminal supergroup of sorts with experience from the past. The band's drummer was once in CITIZENS ARREST. They were an ABC-No Rio hardcore band from late 80's/early 90's. I've still got a 7"er comp which they're on. This band's singer was in the thrash act A.S.D. Plus the guitarist here was once in the hardcore band DEVOID OF FAITH back in the 90's. Their bass player is the only band member without any baggage.

So what you got here are six tracks of actual hardcore with a late 80's influence. Add to that there's a touch of thrash. The vocals by Ian Thompsen are sung clean yet emotionally caustic and are down right cool. The drum work by Derik Moore is fuckin amazing. You really can't hear the bass player, wow how metal is that.

Then there's the guitar work that really pushes this release to the hilt. Nate Wilson can play some wild and vicious riffs. You pack in the talent by these individuals and you've got a damm great release. This reminds me of the past in a good way but with better production and song writing chops. This is probably the best Punk/HC EP you'll hear this year and you should get it.

DOWNCROSS - Hexapoda Triumph review

DOWNCROSS - Hexapoda Triumph

Cavum Atrum Rex

Well whether you file this one under blackened thrash or black & roll, either way this band makes a helluva racket. What we have here is the fourth full length by Belarus duo DOWNCROSS. I'm just now learning about em. After blasting this release a few times I can say that even the two genre terms I've used starting out could be considered merely suggestions.

First off don't let the over two minute eerie synth laden intro fool you into thinking you're gonna be hit with techno experimental BM. The release gets into gear on the second track "Trumpets Salute the Demise of Death". From that point on you're either in for the ride or dragged kicking and screaming. Personally I like the former.

DOWNCROSS are just one of many Eastern European BM acts I've heard over the past five years who keep the genre interesting by injecting more traditional metal into their sound. But it doesn't take anything away from the whole BM formula. To me that's the most important part. On the whole this album is savage sounding BM but then the craziness gets added.

Musically the basics here are vocals, guitars and drums. The latter consists of some basic pounding, cool rolls and finding a way to keep up with the riffs. The vocals vary from caustic singing to violent screaming. In-between all of that the guitar work is all over the place. You get the savage BM riffs mixed with straight up rock riffs. Add to that there's tremolo picked soloing, harmonic melodies and yeah some thrashing.

All in all Hexapoda Triumph is a pleasure to listen to. There's just so much going on in this band's songs that you really have to digest it all or go for just letting it blast in the background while you do horrible things. Either way this is excellent.

AGUILLA - Mankind's Odyssey review

AGUILLA - Mankind's Odyssey

Ossuary Records

So when it comes to power metal I never was into the over the top proggy type stuff or the over blown silly shtick antics. For me I'll take any band with influences based in the whole NWOBHM era. Take that traditional metal style, give it some cool melodies and a vocalist who can hit those high notes then you'll have me as a fan.

This debut album by the Polish five piece AGUILLA fits my criteria for decent sounding power metal. Among their ten cuts here the band covers the basics. First off their vocalist is as versatile as he gets. Blash Raven can easily hit the heavy metal scream mark. But when he's singing straight up with a gutsy tone or a more melodic clean style it's like hey he reminds me of some classic singers of the genre.

Musically galloping MAIDEN-esque rhythms, check on that one. Although a few times it's down right borrowing. That's fine for me. The lead guitar work is fluid and beautiful at times. The rhythm section follows through with nothing overwhelming to distract.

Overall AGUILLA are a cool sounding band that reminds me of some past greats. I'm not gonna name drop. Although the band does have a Science Fiction schtick which they use for inspiration/influences. As long as they don't have a space ship on stage and wear costumes then I'm fine with it.

DESCENT – Order Of Chaos review

DESCENT – Order Of Chaos

Redefining Darkness Records

Here we have the sophomore album by Australia's DESCENT. A few years back their debut came out on Redefining Darkness Records as well. Some things have changed since 2018 for this death metal act. For starters their debut, Towers of Grandiosity, was rooted in the old school of the genre. That was a decent release but you knew something was bubbling under the surface.

And so here are the results once the lid was taken off of this Aussie cauldron. Order Of Chaos is an aptly titled release. This five piece act have ditched some of the old ways. They're still full of crunching riffs via old school DM. But there's a touch of hardcore plus blackend death metal. The formula is far from being new but it works.

I guess the best thing about this album is how consistent the band is raging at full force. Except for taking a slight blackened atmospheric break mid way through. DESCENT really don't let up at all with the punishing riffs. The vocals come off as venomous assaults.

Yeah Order Of Chaos is an aptly titled album and DESCENT are in charge.

Dogma - Father I Have Sinned (Official Music Video)

DEATHFUCKINGCUNT - Decadent Perversity review

DEATHFUCKINGCUNT - Decadent Perversity

Transcending Obscurity Records

Well with a name like DEATHFUCKINGCUNT how could I possibly pass on checking it out. What we have here is a death metal band from Australia (of course they are). They probably spent plenty of time digesting CANNIBAL CORPSE and CRYPTOPSY albums. Then figured they could do it better. As in better I mean far more brutal sounding then the above mentioned bands combined.

Add to that (as if that wasn't enough) this Aussie four piece are very tech death savvy and add enough speed to snap your fuckin neck. Then there are the band's song titles which would have your typical second tier "brootal" death metal acts scratching their heads thinking "dude why can't we come up with song titles like that"? Well because you're pot smoking neanderthals. But hey keep practicing those pig squeals.

Oh yeah about those songs titles well you've got such numbers as "Blunt Force Vasectomy" which would obviously be painful. "Garroted by Frenulum", I had to look up what frenulum was. Oh and my favorite "Suicidal Masturbatory Flagellation" which sounds so fucked up that it could be a real term. Hello CARCASS?

Now all kidding with a sick sadistic grin aside, yes music this extreme would be overwhelming to any normal person as well as any normal metal fan. My first couple of listens threw me to the medicine cabinet for pain pills. But in a few more plays I get the idea to what's not so obvious to the lay person. First off it must be brutal to play/practice these cuts. Supposedly the band plays live under the moniker "DFC". Yeah I can understand that but hey here's their logo.

But what I'm trying to say is that the musicianship this band displays is technically fearsome. There's some crazy as well as typical tech death style guitar leads. But it's the utter madness of the riffs with the bass player trying to keep pace which is fuckin insane. Then you've got the rapid fire drum work. You listen to the song "Devoured by Eunuchs" and your jaw will drop.

While researching DEATHFUCKINGCUNT I learned that they originally started out back in 2007. They released a demo in 2008, a split release in 2009 and put out their debut full length in 2013. They also have band members in the black metal act WARDAEMONIC who are also on this label. So in the end you've got some well honed musicians who's dedication to the craft is exceptional as this album show. Their guitarist is a six string surgeon to say the least.

PURPLE DAWN - Peace & Doom Session Vol. II review

PURPLE DAWN - Peace & Doom Session Vol. II

Electric Valley Records

So when you think about stoner rock / doom from Europe a lay-person would think England or Sweden as it's main purveyors of the heavy and slow. Technically you would be right to think that. But over the years I've found far more interesting acts from the genre in countries like Poland, Italy and now one from Germany.

PURPLE DAWN are a fairly new three piece act who hail from Germany and are totally into a non cliche style. Sure they love SABBATH but they are so much more into the whole doom meets rock meets jamming side of the genre. This is obviously part of a series for the band. Their debut which is the same title which came out in 2020 but as volume one was recorded live. Now we have this one.

Obviously if your a fan of stoner rock/doom or even modern era sludge metal you'll hear snippets of some other acts while listening to this. To me that's fine because it's the whole package which is more important. PURPLE DAWN re-works that package into a blend. When they're in a sludge mode they'll go full on psych. Or in a stoner groove time they'll move into an atmospheric break which is kind of a trip.

In the end you get a lot of hard fuckin rock vibes from the 70's plus some more modern takes. The bottom-line is versatility which is why I consider this interesting beyond the cliche take many other bands in the stoner rock framework do. I'm not a snob. I'm just particular about my music especially from a genre that suffers from originality. PURPLE DAWN break on through with a great seven song release.

CROWBAR - Zero And Below review

CROWBAR - Zero And Below

MNRK Heavy

After my second listen to this new album by CROWBAR I came to a realization. The whole NOLA Sludge thing is pretty much played out. Case in point a few years ago I saw EYEHATEGOD and after five songs I was like "OK I'm done, let's go home". Now twenty years ago or more I would've stayed for the whole set because it was exciting.

Which brings me back to this latest release by Kirk Windstein and whoever is in his band now. So to be fair I don't own every CROWBAR album. This is the twelve fuckin full length if you needed a count. I like the ones I have simply because they're all equally good. In other words they all sound the same. And this one just adds to the collection.

Kirk Windstein is a cool vocalist in the Sludge realm. A great songwriter and his guitar riff style is damm good. He surrounds himself with decent musicians who help in creating his musical vision. And of course the production is always good so blasting any album is no problem.

As far as Zero And Below goes the CROWBAR formula is intact. In fact this is the best CROWBAR album I've heard since their last one. I mean you get a few speedy but pummeling cuts. Then there's the tried and true heavy as fuck shit. And finally there's the melodic and atmospheric cuts.

Sure it's great now but it'll be gathering dust on the shelf with all their other releases until the mood hits to pull one of em out for nostalgia purposes.

KHARON - Shores Of Acheron review

KHARON - Shores Of Acheron

Hellstain Productions

Over the years I've written about quite a few bands who's career start didn't pan out. Then years later the band gets a second chance and it turns out to be fairly good. Case in point is KHARON a black metal act from Norway. Here's a band that started out way over twenty years ago.

Unfortunately things didn't work out in their favor. So obviously the band members would go onto other acts. But it just seemed that, after giving this a few listens, the band members really wanted to get something out at least a full length. And so here we have the first official full length by KHARON.

Now some of these cuts are re-recorded from the band's past short form releases, particularly their 2003 EP Raised by Hellish Demons. They're mixed in with some newer material. Overall the basic style here is pure 90's era BM. The vocals are amazing on the vicious harsh side filled with filth and venom. To me good BM vocals are always a plus.

Musically the songs vary with some having galloping tremolo picked riffs. There's death thrash style roaming around on some cuts. That in it self breaks this from being generic. Plus there's the melodic rhythms on certain cuts which are mixed with intense riffs and powerful drum work. It's not too hard to here where the old and new songs are placed.

In the end you have plenty of new BM acts trying to sound old and it's easy to do. Now when older acts try to be relevant in modern times it's a lot tougher. After listening to this one multiple times I'd say KHARON have finally found their niche in the modern world of Black Metal.

DRUID LORD – Relics Of The Dead review

DRUID LORD – Relics Of The Dead

Hells Headbangers

I first learned about this Orlando, Florida four piece death doom act back in 2011. They did a split release with WOODEN STAKE. Now I liked the WOODEN STAKE song on that 7"er, obviously. DRUID LORD's contribution was decent. So here we are around a decade later and this is the band's third full length release.

Musically DRUID LORD are the pungent stench of a rotted corpse. Listening to this reminds me of an Italian horror flick called Zombie from 1979. Not a great flick at all but the zombies who climbed out of the grave were sick looking decomposed pieces of shit.

This album does come across as a sick fuckin piece of rotting filth. Most of the time the rhythms are at a snail's pace which a few variations. Once in a while a guitar solo will dive in like a bolt of lightning. The vocals by Tony Blakk are typical death doom deep harsh style with some growls. Not too different from what you remember from a few Peaceville Records' vets. In the end it's decent.

SANHEDRIN - Lights On review

SANHEDRIN - Lights On

Metal Blade Records

I've been listening to this on and off since it came out in early March. I pretty much put it on the back burner while I caught up with other stuff on the review list. But I can honestly say this has become a favorite album for me in 2022. If you like Metal that reminds ya of the 1980's, and not hair metal but true metal, then this is a band you'll love.

SANHEDRIN are a three piece act from New York City. The band is made up of Erica Stoltz on bass/vocals, Jeremy Sosville on guitar/backing vocals and Nathan Honor on drums. The band has been around since 2015 and this is their third full length.

I kinda hate myself for not knowing about this band earlier since their second album, The Poisoner from 2019, came out on Cruz del Sur records. Yeah how did I ignore that? But anyways Erica was once in two bands that I do know about. Those being AMBER ASYLUM and HAMMERS OF MISFORTUNE. Guitarist Jeremy Sosville is supposedly still in BLACK ANVIL.

Anyways this is total 80's worshiping Metal and it's just damm good. You've got some all out rockers like opener "Correction" which has a PRIEST touch to it. "Change Takes Forever" is also a rocker. Then there's a few melodic rockers like the title cut plus "Lost At Sea". But in all honesty this album is perfect from start to finish.

MORGUE SUPPLIER - Inevitability review

MORGUE SUPPLIER - Inevitability

Transcending Obscurity Records

In what I would definitely describe as a fucked state of affairs in this world. It's not a huge surprise to find some extreme stuff that is just as crazy. I mean the first cut off of this album "Absurd Identity" spells everything out exactly.

Now just for the record MORGUE SUPPLIER are a two piece act hailing from Chicago, Illinois. Technically they've been around for at least twenty years. The band is made up of Paul Gillis on guitar/vocals and Stephen Reichelt on bass. The drums are programmed. Both of these guys are also in the band DRUG HONKEY. Now if you're familiar with that band then you'll understand MORGUE SUPPLIER.

If not well what we have here is a melting pot of death metal and avant-grind with touches of atmospheric elements or more precisely drone. You would think this was a hard album to get your head into. But since I am a grindcore fan and do find some of the more new experimental aspects of the genre exciting. I thought this was a cool thing to listen to.

Instead of being totally fast and brutal, which is typical of grind. I found it down right disturbing or at least it could be for some. To me it's like being beaten into unconsciousness only to be revived for further torture. That's how this album flows. There's some disjointed tech riffing action which I believe adds to the whole adventure in torment. Damm good bass work as well.

The vocals are a mix of hoarse howls, vomit speech and harsh screams. The drum programming is not so bad either. The song structures are wild as fuck. Yeah this is fairly amazing stuff here. A tour de force in extreme metal.
