MAGIC CIRCLE - Departed Souls review

MAGIC CIRCLE - Departed Souls

20 Buck Spin

While far too many stoner rock acts ape SABBATH's Masters of Reality, this Boston band goes straight to Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and some Sabotage era of the Brits. You would have to go back to ORCHID to find an act worthy of totally copying SABBATH to the hilt and not getting pissed off about it.

Like I mentioned earlier, MAGIC CIRCLE hail from Boston. They're a five piece act which started out in 2011. This is their third full length release. What's funny is that a couple of these guys were in a power-violence band back in the early 2000s. This band's vocalist, Brendan Radigan, has also taken on the mantle of being PAGAN ALTAR's live singer.

Getting back to the music yeah it's doom hugely influenced by SABBATH. The vocals have that nasally sound of Ozzy. The guitar soloing is straight up Tony Iommi blues lead style. The riffs are decent yet are not so heavy handed. The drum work has that Bill Ward eclectic and explosive touch. The bass is somewhat subdued a bit. Song wise this is good from start to finish with no duds of their eight cuts. They also toss in some keyboard use which was not unheard of on the latter SAB-4 albums. In the end it's damm good.
