Yep this has been out for a year or so. But since Wolf's blog was down when it came out I'll go ahead and review it. They are a important local band to Me. And should have some new stuff released in 2017. HORSESKULL is the band that rose out of the ashes of Raleigh doom metal legends SOULPREACHER. I won't get into the whole story. But Yeah SOULPREACHER was doing doom metal. And doing it well. Pretty much before any other band in Raleigh. Back when metal was nearly dead in some ways. Well they reformed and started doing it as HORSESKULL. I was excited. I thought Fuck Yeah.
There had been a ton of doom & doom metal or stoner metal or heavily influenced bands turning up on the local triangle metal scene. I thought HORSESKULL had returned to show them how its done. But as usual around here. With the lame local music media. No credit or respect earned is ever really given. Many lessor bands could not be bothered to hook em up with shows. The guys in HORSESKULL are real metal people. No they don't play loud indie rock or noise rock and call it metal while being in a side band playing lesbian influenced bluegrass. They listen to metal, go to see other metal bands and play real heavy metal. What started out as a return to true doom metal. HORSESKULL has added some more psychedelic , noisy influences. They even kick in some speed here and there. Still this CD shuts down any notion that they are second rate. Well recorded. But not enough to ruin that raw nasty edge.
As much as I loved SOULPREACHER. This stuff is even better. Currently Raleigh's best real metal band. And the best is yet to come. Hipsters Say Horseback. I say HORSESKULL Mutherfuckers ! Fuck weak Doom !
