ELECTROCUTION - Psychonolatry review

(sorry but this is the only video I could find that's remotely close)

Connoisseurs and collectors of everything death metal will likely know who ELECTROCUTION are or more precisely were. But for the rest of you well here ya go. This Italian band started out back in 1990 and a few years later released their debut full length Inside The Unreal. What was significant about that release is that you had this cool sounding primal death thrash mixed with the newer style of technical death metal. No one at the time knew it was a groundbreaking sound because the release never got out and about to people who would've screamed "holy shit!"

A second reason Inside The Unreal did not make all the rounds is that as you and I know in 1993 death metal took a nose dive in popularity in favor of black metal. Now honestly whatever the actual case may be the band would go on to putting out a few short form releases up to 1997 when they called it quits. By the way Inside The Unreal was reissued a few years ago for fans who were into the music and not the collector scum idea or fetching Ebay prices. Now in 2014 the band got back together with one new member, I think, and released their comeback album Metaphysincarnation. It was definitely a huge step further into tech death than before and what was probably their intention for a proper follow-up to their debut. I didn't care for it.

Which brings us to the here and now with ELECTROCUTION, a new line-up leaving vocalist Mick Montaguti as the sole original member and this new release. As far as the basics go "this" band is still following the old Florida DM style with obvious nods to DEATH as well as going even further south with the death thrash riffage might of old SEPULTURA. Yeah it's exactly what their last one put forth and yet it's as if this line-up has reigned in the excesses and honed in on the cohesiveness. It's Montaguti's vision come to fruition. Chunky down-tuned riffs fly head long into atmosphere spreading leads. Timing signatures are dammed as neck snapping changes come and go like coin flips. The vocals are down right horrendous and filthy. The drum work also summer-salts from straight up rhythmic patterns to jackhammer concussive blasting. The bottom line here is that an old dog can come back to bite you in the ass. It's also a great way to start off the new year with a death metal classic.
