AKASHA / UNREST - Vibrations Of Blood And Hate Split review

AKASHA / UNREST - Vibrations Of Blood And Hate Split

Grey Matter Productions

The whole one man black metal thing has taken great strides in progression of the years. It all started with loner wretches in their parent's basements or apartment bedrooms using lo-fi recording tech to create utter BURZUM or DARKTHRONE worshiping releases. Nowadays I've heard some one man artists create sophisticated and symphonic sounds that'll rival DIMMU BORGIR, when they were still good of course. But as far as these two USBM artists go well they just don't give a fuck about progression.

We start off with AKASHA a one man BM project created by the artist who goes by the name of Leech and hails from California. His contribution to this split is three cuts of thrashy raw black metal. Dare I say it all has a early EMPEROR feel to it. Minus the keys of course but the clean harshness to it musically and vocally are incredible. Add to that the guy even does a blackened version of MOTORHEAD's "Ace of Spades", what balls. AKASHA also has an EP, Consuming the Soul, on another label which also came out this year. Might be worth checking out.

UNREST is quite the opposite. It's a one man BM act created by a guy named Destroyer who hails Columbus, Ohio. Destroyer has been doing UNREST for a few years now and has a nice catalog of previous releases including two full lengths, an EP and some splits. His contribution here is three cuts of low fi atmospheric and ambient sounds coupled with Destroyer screeching like a banshee being tortured. I was not impressed with his portion of this release.

As I do with a lot of these split releases, I weigh out both bands as if in a confrontation. Sure when it comes to BM splits you want both bands/artists to convey a different approach in sound and style in order to enjoy it fuller. But for me I'll take what AKASHA is doing over UNREST any day. Hopefully we'll see a full length by AKASHA next year.
