PROFANATICA - Altar of the Virgin Whore EP

Whenever I see the words "legendary" in a description of a band I get that sick feeling of being let down. Granted in this band's case, PROFANATICA, who put out two great black metal releases years ago. Have been a let down for over the past few years with sub par releases that are equal to their 1990's stuff.
I mean here's a band, just to recap, who in 2007 released the great Profanatitas de Domonatia full length. Then in 2010 they came out with Disgusting Blasphemies Against God which to me was just fuckin incredible. Both of those full lengths were blasphemy black metal that invoked nothing less than evil, along with huge smiles on fan's faces.
But since then Paul Ledney and company have been coasting. Sure the music will have it's enjoyable side for fans of sick twisted hate. But when you're just repeating the same song structures/patterns over and over well the excitement is lost. That's what the past couple of releases were like and it's the same thing with Altar of the Virgin Whore. OK sure you lost guitarist John Gelso but hey get over it and start producing something decent.
Now of course this EP is not a total loss. Songs like "Prayer in Eclipse", "Fuck the Messiah" and the opener "Conceived with Sin" are actually decent amongst the typical PROFANATICA battering of blackened filth. But three out of eight cuts on a tour EP are not what I'd call something cool from a "legendary" band.
